Fix for ABS, VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, & Brake lights remain on no CEL, or how to repair an ECU

@FJRyder I don’t suppose you have a spare, repaired ECU unit I could buy from you and then send you mine, do you? My ‘05 has the ABS, VSC Trac, VSC Off lights coming on with no codes. It’s a daily driver so I’d love to find a quick swap out solution.

You can buy them on eBay.

Dang, they’re proud of them. Although I’m sure it’s a lot cheaper than going to a mechanic. If I’m going to spend $1,000, I need to make sure this is the correct repair!
Sorry, I don't have a spare to swap out.
I can turn it around in 24-48 hours.

Well... count me as another '02 LX470 with a failed ABS ECU (@ 214k miles).

Since I'm not handy with the soldering and I did not feel comfortable bothering Mr. FJRyder, I went the G7 Computer route to repair the ECU. I just got it back and no dice! They actually gave the exact verbiage of what someone else earlier in this thread received (they repaired the unit, but did not provide any specifics).

I'm now waiting for a used one to arrive from the UAE.

This thread has been great and hopefully helps me get "Neptune" back on the road!

@FJRyder I just want to say thanks for making this thread. @white_lx pointed me to this thread for info after my ABS/brake lights came on and I created this thread: ABS and BRAKE lights on. Techstream won't connect to ABS ECU. - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/abs-and-brake-lights-on-techstream-wont-connect-to-abs-ecu.1319157/#post-15091667

For the moment I think my next step is jumping the diagnostic terminals and checking the ECU connectors/power/ground. However, if it's clear that my ABS module is dead, I'd be keen on trying to test the resonator or attempting that repair. I have a Fluke 87V multimeter (no oscilloscope) but I'm not 100% sure which of the X3 terminals are which and I'd like a sanity check on that. I have a standard soldering iron set but I do not have a hot air set. Do you have a go-to tutorial or source (or something) I can check out, for that method? I know zero about it and don't want to assume everything I see on the internet is the correct way to do things.

Thanks for making this epic thread.

Thanks a million for this thread @FJRyder - I just repaired my ABS module with the 45-cent resonator (and some beer, and a lot of help from a friend who is an electronics wizard). I bought the resonator from Newark that you mentioned on page one. Sure enough, that ONE resonator was completely freaking dead, and that's what caused my inability to connect with the ABS/VSC/TRAC module at all in techstream. I was able to communicate with every other module in the vehicle, except for that one. And now it works great. I had to power cycle the car a couple of times for the dashboard lights to go away, but they went away on their own.

That's awesome, thanks for letting me know!

Within Techstream it is possible to clear the ABS memory out and complete a zero point calibration. That should clear the lights also as there are often many error codes generated as the component fails.

Cheers!

Funny you say that, the first time when I started it up and the lights remained, I thought "let's do a zero point calibration on it", so I went back inside and grabbed my techstream equipment, headed back out, started the car once again and the lights went out.

I'm guessing turning the ignition on and off was enough to clear the erroneous codes, cool.

ABS ECU experts please advise. My wife was driving my 07 lx a few days ago when the brake, abs, ?trac, ?vsc, ?skid lights lit up while she was driving it. She thinks they stayed lit for awhile, no CEL, and no buzzer. The car was driving normal as far as she knows. She's put another 500 miles on the car since with no issues. At this point is there anything that I can do besides wait for it to happen again so I can run diagnostics on it? I have techstream if that helps.

Since the the problem is intermittent, it ill be difficult to perform any useful diagnostics.
Your best bet is to get TechSteam with cable and check for error codes. You can also use it to monitor wheel position sensors to look for issues.

There could be other random things causing this as well. Search around for these but something as unusual as a gas cap (less likely). Most likely to the the ABS ECU.

It was also raining heavily at the time. I'm thinking water in a speed sensor connector? I have techstream setup however catching the problem when it happens will be difficult. I was thinking of putting some dielectric grease at those connectors and see how it goes.

I can imagine it could be possible for this to set it off, I'm just not sure how likely that it.
Did you pull the codes from the ABS module? This will store errors for a period of time and could be useful for diagnosing intermittent issues.

If anyone is looking for a spare ABS ECU, I have one that needs the resonator repair. I used this unit while I sent my original to FJRyder for repair. I have since sold my LX470.
