First time my 80 has let me down/towed

So the 80 took its first ride on a tow truck.

I left for a friends party in the afternoon and I noticed on a uphill it cut out 2 times for a second.
I hadn't drivin it in awhile so I filled it up with 93 octane and didn't think much of it.

When I left my friends house the 80 made it about a 1/4 mile and coughed a few times then just died.

It turns over very strong still but no sounds from the fuel pump. I switched EFI relay's but that didn't help
I noticed a melted 15amp EFI fuse right in the same box. I pulled it. cleaned terminal and popped in a new fuse. Still nothing. No fuel pump sound. I might have to re wire the efi fuse to another spot on that panel as it did a little melting.

So I called triple A. I will be looking at it tomorrow.

Just looking for some suggestions.

One suggestion I got from a friend was that a few 80's out there have had harness shorts inside the tank for the fuel pump itself. I will be pulling that out first to check.

Mine did the same thing. I replaced the EFI wiring and it's worked for the past two weeks just fine.

I was just going in my shop to replace the wiring! Just pick up a fuse holder to make it easier.

I went the cheap way and just used a butt connector to the existing wiring that was good. So far so good.

Took about 30 minutes to fix. I'll replace all the wiring at some point....

Just finished. I snipped wires and soldered in a fuse holder. We will see. Going to try it now.

My connectors where not green like yours. Red wire was charred for like an inch.

Fingers crossed!

Let me know how it goes, my wire went bad at the EFI relay not the fuse... probably made some sort of difference.

Still doing it. Drove few miles perfect then pulling out up hill hard acceleration. Cut out for 2 secs then back on. Drove home fine even after driving hard up hill ,around corners, in circles.
Man I'm starting to think fuel pump. I need an amp gauge to see if the circuit is cutting power or if pump is just dying.

Dang!

Well @rc51kid.
I recently bought a new car so the cruiser has been sitting a lot. I hadn't driven it for a couple weeks the day this issue started.

I think, deep down, you know the problem. Hell hath no fury like a Cruiser scorned. Time to show the 80 some love.

Why are you fixating on the fuel pump? As has been mentioned, EFI fuse powers the Y/R wire, most of the stuff under the hood and the ECU. This can be helpful, quick and dirty test. 30 Amp Automotive Fuse Circuit Tester

I'm not sure at this point. Any suggestions @Tools R Us ?

That's exact tool I was too going to order. Never seen one. Buddy showed me one at his shop earlier today.

Have you tried replacing your EFI Relay as well? They are about $12...

It could have gone out when your fuse fried.

I did. New oem. Also changed open circuit relay in drivers side kick. That's last relay in circuit.

The common fail points have been mentioned and are OK? Leaves not so common stuff, will need to look at the EWD, follow/inspect the harness/wires for chafing, insulation failure.

What about fuel pump failure?

So update. I went to start the truck a few hours after driving. Crank no start. I beat on the tank with a rubber Mallot. I wasn't into pulling out anymore diagnostic tools....so I walked away and went out to dinner

Well the cruiser is up and running again! @landtank called it...................

Fuel pump relay was the problem.

It bench tested fine. But I'm guessing the melted fuse was from poor contact in the relay.

Also truck fires right up now after 1 spin of the engine. I've noticed this last year or so it taking a bit longer to start.

I put old unit back in. It turned over about 6 times but did fire. The truck was turning over without firing at all 10 min prior to new relay.

I drove it about 40 miles since. Runs perfect again.

This should be added as a PM item for sure.
Also rock auto it's $77. Dealer is $85 with discount. Guess what came fro. Rock auto. An Oem Toyota unit!!!

@scrowley could you please elaborate? My rig is doing some of the same things ie burning fuses. however this is a japanese fuse on mine and I have measured 13-15amps on the fuse at idle and stationary acceleration. How did you determine the fuel pump relay and what/where is this relay? Do you mean the EFI relay under the hood in the "black box"?

To be clear, are you talking about the "fuel pump relay" that only switches the pump into low-voltage mode, or the circuit opening relay that actually switches the pump on and off?
