Day 2 - Colorado Springs to Silverton
I woke up at a decent hour and got breakfast at the hotel and then peeled out to Walmart to load up on supplies. Since this 40 was new to me, I wanted to make sure I had all the basic fluids covered, extra parts and of course a cooler with drinks to get me through the 5.5 hour trip to Silverton. My original plan was to leave from Denver, but since that didn't work out I left Colorado Springs via Hwy 24. Once on 24, I hooked up to 285 for a few minutes then cut west on Hwy 50.
Once I was on Hwy 50, the scenery really started to pick up. The first decent pass I went over was Monarch Pass (Elev 11,312). I dropped the 40 down to 3rd and eased up the pass uneventfully and took a pic at the top. Once I passed through Gunnison, Hwy 50 winds along the Blue Mesa Reservoir and the Gunnison River for some really cool views. Lots of boats and fishers out enjoying the day and weather. I stopped here for some pics as well. Back on the road, 50 would take me all the way into Montrose where I stopped to fuel up before heading south on 550.
Hwy 550 takes you south through Ridgway, Ouray and eventually into Silverton. Once I was on 550, I could feel myself getting excited and anxious to get there. The mountains you pass on this road are phenomenal to see in person. I also happened to pass (correction "get passed by" haha) 3 or 4 different 200's headed to their annual LCDC event.
I stopped in Ouray for a few minutes to take some pictures and give my buddies a call to let them know I was close to Silverton. The plan was to meet up at the grocery store in Silverton to get some food and supplies for the night. Our camping destination was Clear Lake (Elev. ~12k ft).
