you need a pyro to tell the story...
they are relatively cheap (compared to a new head)
you might be fine, you might not be. i cannot tell.

i drove a HZJ75 turbo with propane that dumped TONS of black smoke (0-120 in 13.7 sec on 35s) and never cracked the head
but
better safe than sorry.

ok no worries. so if i install my pyro this week, what temp is safe and what is starting to push the limit?

i have been told that anything over 650 degrees Celsius is around the safe max temp. not sure what that converts to in F. 1200 fahrenheit?

thanks for your help

Tapage,

i was thinking about a bolt going right through with rubber mounting on the top - middle and underneath of the bolt if you know what i mean?

The po did this to one of the motor mounts on my rig....

It works GREAT!

i took the cruiser out for a spin in the mud and hills on the weekend and it ran like a dream. every hill climb was a breeze and it had endless power and torque for pulling other people out of bogs and creeks. unfortunately i snapped my only remaining engine mount on a hill climb even with a small hyper-extension chain attached. i think this weekend i am going to go for the straight though bolt approach. i have a feeling that my engine mount snapping worries will soon be gone. if this fails then i guess its back to the drawing board.

i also lifted the boost up to 14psi today with a boost compensator tap, it makes a much louder turbo wine and seems to have doubled the torque again!!!!, not that i didnt hhave enough before hand. this engine is starting to really impress me. i would rate it the same as a small fuel injected v8. heaps of power + plenty of torque but unlike a v8 uses next to no fuel.:bounce: awesome!

i will post some more photos up as soon as i work out how to post more than 3 photos. cheers

Great report:D Maybe the performance shops would have a heavy duty mount:idea:

Love this thread James,

Awesome job with the 14B-T. I would think many people will use your build when
their 13B-T's finally pack it in. A have a couple of questions.

Did you get two 14B's for $100?
Did you buy a wrecked 14BT and get it rebuilt for $3600?
Did you rebuild it yourself?

Thats a great price mate. A got quoted $5750 for a 13BT to 14BT change over.
Your engine conversion is awesome.
I wanna do it too:)

Hey mate,
i bought two totally siezed wrecked to the max 14b's that had been sitting in a truck yard for years aparently. i took all the stuff i wanted off them and sandblasted the parts etc.
i bought a running 14bt with a hole in one of the pistons from a leaky injector from an engine importing place and rebuilt it with new pistons rings seals gaskets etc and cost 3600 all up (not including the turbo which cost 1500. though i could have used the clapped out turbo that came with the engine, but i wanted the whole engine to be perfect.).
i spent days trying to find dirt cheap parts and refused to pay anything ridiculous as i knew the 14b's were common as. i ended up having to replace 2 valves, face the head and get the new sleeves put in and that was about it. luckily for me i have all the engineering tools and presses avaliable at the office.

most wreckers quoted me 5-6 grand for a 14bt/15bt but i knew there were cheaper ways around it. now that i look back on it all i should have gone for the 15bt, but there was a 3 month wait for one that was being pulled out of a truck in jap that didnt run for the same price. so i decided to go 14bt as they had one there in the shop.
fortunately for me also the injectors and pumps from one of the siezed motors were in new condition so they were tested and used and work great. (still running 14b injectors but was told they wouldnt hurt the 14bt.)

hope you can use some of this info...

Wayne, i have been running 12-13psi boost for a few weeks now and im already wanting to amp it up more... a bloke at a diesel tuning place here in oz told me that there was a customer of his running 18psi.. i can believe that but not sure if the engine is going to last very long. i have pissed around with my boost tap etc while driving along and it seems that it doesnt have much more power after 12psi which means the fuel screw is set to around that but i can still increase the boost to around 15 if i want.. the transition from 13 - 15psi does not increase the engines power... anyway the question i wanted to ask was, what is a safe boost i can run without doing any fast damage.. i want to run it as high as i can but dont want to blow it up any time soon... i was thinking around 14-15 at the max.. any suggestions??

cheers james

What components did you use for the 80 series steering setup? I might go the same way with my 45.

i run 14-16 lbs but you need to set the fuel up to what your pyro dictates.
you also have to remember that VERY SELDOM are you going to see the max boost unless on a hill or towing or EXTREMEMLY heavy foot. if you are achieveing the max boost then it isn't the boost that is going to kill your engine... it is your right foot.

what a wise comment dude ..

so if i run my engine with the fuel up more so that its not too hot and limit the boost to 14 odd psi then that is safe....??? i kinda understand whta youre saying, im not too worried about the level of fuel that goes though it because i can moniter it... i am aware of the fact that you can wash the bores if the fuel is too high so im not game to turn it up too much...,but i am more worried about the amount of boost so that it doesnt blow the lid off.

14-16 sounds good though... i will piss around with it this weekend. cheers

80 series power steering box. lj70 tie rod. 60 series relay rod. 60 series knuckle arms. and mixed and matched the tie rod ends.. sorry i cant rememeber what they were from. there is another australian on mud who i used to copy.. is a silver shorty with no roof...... i would suggest a 70 series steering column beucase you can adjust the steering wheel height. but its really a mix and match game... also have to strengthen the chassis so it doesnt crack

Hi mate, have you still got this truck? If so, how is the 14B-T going? Solved your engine mount issues by now i hope!

These are my questions too James!
Love this thread, you did an inspiring job with the 14B-T!
