Hey everyone. Yeah I know, noob here, first post is asking a question older than time itself, etc. etc. - But I have to ask because I'm at wits' end. I learned to drive on a GX so it's about time I get one of my own, but so far it has been elusive.

I've been looking for a GX in central-ish California for the last few months - Dark grey or white w/ black interior, 2014-2019, under $30k, decent condition (relatively low rust, no major repair work or signs of coolant / oil leak, not beat up, etc.), and within a ~250 mi radius of the SF Bay Area. But for some reason, every time I think I found one, I go in to take a look at it in person and it looks like it has been beat up in one way or another, more than I'd expect for a luxury car with <120k miles. Or, I'll see signs of oil seepage or coolant leak (or all of the above). I've seen that there are more GXs in LA, but a bit worried that heading down there to extend my search will be a waste of time.

What I'd like to know -

Are my standards too high / expectation for price too low? I feel like I should be able to get one of these for under $30k that is in pretty good shape, but so far I have been mostly seeing ones that have various cosmetic + mechanical issues that are too big to ignore on a daily basis.

Where are you guys finding your GXs? I'm finding these on Autotrader / CarGurus / Cars.com, wondering if the ones I see are the leftovers and if the good ones are actually getting snapped up really fast and if I actually have to spend the time going to dealer sites directly to find something good.

At this point I'm wondering if I'm being an idiot in some way I don't realize on my search, lol

Any tips appreciated! Thanks :)

When I was looking I found several decent ones on Lexus dealership lots and none of those were listed on any other site like Auto Trader. They were listed only on the dealership's site. I'm not sure if this is a common practice with Lexus dealers or if only in my area. May be worth going to individual Lexus dealer websites to look at their inventory.

While you may pay a little more, finding one at a Lexus dealer is most certainly going to mean that it's stock and unmolested and most likely owned by an older person and a non abuser.

I don't think your price point is unreasonable.

Carmax

Even worth it to have them ship it to your local store - theyll fix anything within reason that needs fixed too.

I see what you mean, because aside from being beat to hell, this one checks the boxes.
Just have to keep searching - it can take a while. I let a few get away, but I think it was worth waiting (and the $800 I spent to ship it)

Even something like this with the shipping is probably less than Cali might charge - thats up to your interpretation though

It may be the geographic area you are looking in. They are quite a bit cheaper here in the middle of the country. But, the problem is you have to fly out and get it and drive it back (if you want to inspect it), and run the risk of realizing it's not a good rig when you get there. So getting one remotely can easily add $1-2K in expenses.

When I bought my GX I had an alert set up on Cargurus that would notify me when one was posted. I got lucky as one that checked all the boxes showed up not long after I set the alert. I immediately called the seller and took a day off of work to go get it. You definitely need to be ready drop everything and pounce on one when it is listed.

I bought a 2018 with 74K (no accidents and really good oil change history, every 5K which is unusual in the used GX market) for $30,295 (not including TTL) in August.
After looking for almost a year and passing on around 10 different GX460s that was a solid "real world" price for the vehicle at the time.

IMO, perhaps add a couple grand to your purchase price to get one with as close to 60K-70K and as late a model year as is reasonable for your budget.
Add an auxiliary transmission cooler, do a transmission service (at least 4 drain/fills) and replace the coolant as soon as you get it.

I think this will give you the best long term experience.

Every single 2013-2019 GX460 I looked at was on original coolant (unless the radiator was replaced) and transmission fluid.
I ran across a few that had diff and transfer case services @ 60K, but the vast majority didn't.
Other than brake fluid intervals, late model Lexus maintenance schedules suck, IMO.

You need to realize that there werent many GXs even built and on top of that they are EXTREMELY popular everywhere. Especially here in the west. You can either lower your standards and increase the amount you are willing to pay or wait potentially a year to find one. Depends on what you want to do.

Can't speak for the West but there is a big supply of used GX460s here in the middle of the country.

I think another issue with GX's becoming more scarce is the fact that people are discovering that for about the same price as a 4R, they can get a V8, a lot more creature comforts and darn near the same off road capabilities.
When we purchased our 2013 back in 2018, we were in South Lake Tahoe vacationing at the time, in fact just about the same time as we are up here now!
I saw the car, I believe in CarGurus, in L.A. from a Lexus dealer. We live in south Orange County, and we were set to come home the next day. I told the dealer to hold the car and we'd be there sometime late in the day, straight from Tahoe (about a 7 hour drive). Apparently it was just traded in the day before because it hadn't even been detailed yet. So my family and I set in to inspect the vehicle. It as a mess, but very straight with only 32k miles. From the driver seat memory going almost all the way up, the satellite radio being on a Korean station, crumbs and small toy trinkets, I figured it must have been a small Korean mom, hence NEVER off roaded! It even had the clear protective plastic over the door sills. There were a couple of minor scratches on the paint and the rear wing had a crack, but Lexus said they'd replace the wing and remove all scratches.
SOLD!
We came back a couple weeks later (had some issues with this dealership) and picked up our GX!
Moral of the story, is, in my opinion, a Lexus dealership is more apt and prepared to pristine out your new ride than a private owner or used car dealer.
Second moral, try to purchase from a soccer mom!

Finding one with the best service history and current mechanical condition should trump any year or mileage (within reason) in my opinion. Unless you are dead set on eeither of the two facelift refreshes aesthetically, broaden your net and go after the best condition and documented one you can find. Having one with 90-120k miles shouldn't be a detractor. In 2020 I bought a 2010 with 134k for $15k because it had the best history and current mechanical condition. Now 70k miles later it's still bone dry with no leaks and in phenomenal mechanical condition. If I were to be shopping and saw mine for sale in this condition I'd buy it.

As Rednexus said the middle of the country will provide a ton of options, especially Texas.

I use carfax.com for dealers , you'll find a lot more here
and Autotrader for FSBO
I forgot Craig's List for FSBO and dealers , bought all mine on CL
The one I have now took a year to find

I am adamant about not paying a sales tax , that's why it took me a year to find my FSBO 2018 GX

From my limited experience eith URs its not a matter of if but when it leaks.

Mileage is irrelevant with religious maintenance.

Focus on well maintained or overly maintained trucks or trucks that have already had their timing cover and Valley plate done.

You can do everything right and still blow a head gasket.

These are not 4 cylinder trucks and can not be maintained like one.

Why my next truck will have a 2TR.

I've had buddies recommend going the Carmax delivery route but the thought of paying the $$$ to ship it and then finding out it has dings that weren't visible on the photos feels a bit disconcerting. Last time I went to look at one of these at Carmax, it looked great in the pictures but there was some stuff that was immediately obvious when I went to look in person. Though to be fair, my sample size = 1 for Carmax so far

I was a bit surprised when I learned that these things don't come with a transmission cooler after my first hot weather limp mode adventure in one

Yeah when mine showed up, the front 'cup holder' lid was badly scratched, and they agreed to replace it pretty quickly.

You just need to scour the photos of the imperfections.

On the flip side, we once shipped a X5 from Cali to Ohio with them, and they had a few imperfection photos... finally came and it was really beat to hell (very sad for a 2022). At that point the ball is mainly in your court, but it sucks having to fight for either the credit back, or in our case we were lucky enough to have another X5 option on the lot so they refunded the shipping. The guys who work there are not technically responsible for the fact the other dealer sucked at documenting it, but they try.

All goes to say Id do it again, but I would try and keep it to the closer ones if possible...easier to eat $800 than $2G's if it really goes south.

It may come down to how picky one is over the condition of the vehicle.
Sometimes it's six of one, half dozen of another...
I got mine in pristine condition, fully detailed, all the paint nick's and scratches taken care with a new rear wing, with no change in price, but yeah we paid sales tax.
Or go FSBO, no sales tax and if you still want the felling of, "Yeah, I just spent almost $30k, and I want my ride to look it too!" then you may spend the cost of what would have been sales tax getting it up to your standards, instead of having a dealer do it for free, and with a little warranty to boot.
Just my preference, albeit, I've bought far more than my share of vehicles from private owners, Porsche's to BMW's, etc. So, no judgment.

What does "big" mean though? How is it compared to 4th gen 4runners?
He means they are available for purchase, hence rhe big supply

GXes tend to be narrower at the waist and taller. If you do a third row delete it has more space than a 4runner. If you delete both rows its quite cavernous.
