This is such a simple question it's almost embarrassing to ask... Anyone know what size cap wrench fits on the 90915-30002 filters for the 1HD and 1KZ engines? I've had two instances now where the filter was so tight it could not be removed by hand. On my 1KZ engine, the filter can't be accessed easily except from the top, so only a cap wrench style will work to get a good grip on the filter. It's definitely 15 flutes... I thought it was a 100mm x 15, but that's too big. The next size down I can find is a 93mm or a 90mm, both of which seem like they might be too small since the 100 mm was close. Since I didn't have the right sized cap wrench, I debated just punching a screw driver through the side to remove the filter, but instead opted for the safer route of removing the fuel filter to get more space and it still just barely worked. I want to get the correct sized cap wrench instead in case it happens again.

Try using a strap wrench ... mine is perfect for this kind of thing.
not enough room to tighten it and move the handle... I need something where I can grab the filter from the top, otherwise I have to start moving components out of the way... which can be done, just takes longer.

I use a large set of channel locks that open to about 5-6” and grab it fro the top and slowly loosen it up until hand tight and go the rest by hand. Works well for me.

I'll have to buy a larger set of channel locks. I tried that solution but my largest ones wouldn't open wide enough. This would clearly be the cheapest and most versatile solution.

I did find the right cap wrench from Toyota, but it's $35 plus overseas shipping. Unfortunately the details don't divulge the size so I can find something cheaper. I know it's slightly less than 100mm but not sure how much less. Here's the official Toyota tool:

Measure a spare filter with a pair of calipers?

You can use a strap with an extension and a ratchet. A wrench for a specific filter size is a poor investment IMO as there are approximately 100000000 different filter sizes out there. The multi grip/channel lock style are nice but often can’t get them in there. The best ones are this style - excellent for tight spaces

Thank you for posting what you found! Just picked up a hilux with the 1kz and my first thought was "welp, that oil filter is not in an ideal spot". I tend to go with K&N filters because they have the nut on the end which makes it easy to get them out of weird spaces, but this cap will do fine. I just bought one despite how much extra it's going to be to get it from overseas. The joys of having fun vehicles i guess.

Where do you buy the Oem filter? 90915-30002
Is a cheaper after maker ?
Can I use the 90915-30002-8T to replace the above ?
Cheers

This is the oil filter wrench I use. Just used it this past weekend on my 1KZ oil filter, also works great on my big block Chevy's oil filter.

Make sure you have it set to tighten the jaws on the filter when you're turning counter clockwise. If it's not, open the jaws all the way and rotate the center hub to flip the arms the opposite direction. Mine came set the wrong way out of the box and would have been useless, loosening the jaws while turning counter clockwise. I'd expect anyone on this forum to be smart enough to figure that out, but some reviews mention this problem and apparently they weren't able to figure that out.

They're available many places, but I generally use partsouq.com or megazip.com and order multiples at one time to save on shipping costs. There are tons of aftermarket alternatives and I'm sure more than one of them are perfectly fine, but I have no way of knowing which are good vs bad as they are all unknown brands to me (just as many US 3rd party brands would likely be unknown to non-US customers). Maybe you could search each brand specifically and form your own conclusion, or just pay the $30 premium for the Toyota filter and have confidence it will work. I only go through about 1 filter every 12-18 months (I don't drive the car that much), so saving money on the filter doesn't do much for me (I suppose the same argument could be made that if I don't drive much, a below average filter won't do much to me).

NAPA has a comparable oil filter, but the number escapes me. Doesn't seem worth buying as it's roughly the same price as OEM
OEM filter available from Toyota dealer and SE Toyota dealers are having a 25% off sale with free shipping is spend over $75. Great time to stock up on a few, and other OEM parts with discount, free shipping etc.

Here is a commonly used SE Toyota Dealer

The NAPA oil filter is, or used to be, Wix, and folks have had this filter damage their engine. Not recommended.
Good to know. There is really no reason not to by the OEM filter. It's like $18 with this sale. I buy them in bulk anytime the run a discount.
