Failed today with these numbers... Suggestions for where to look ?

x2 your Air Injection is shot! Check per manual. I have had good luck cleaning out the ABV and seeing those numbers change.

Dynosoar:zilla:

14:1 air fuel ratio at 15 mph, Rich.
13.95:1 at 25 mph, Rich.
14.7:1 optimum.
Air injection is probably not working but it looks like you have other issues. Get out the engine emission control manual and start going through each system.

A brand new cat would also help but you would burn it up before your next smog.

Thanks guys.

New Flowmaster CAT (300 miles)
New Rebuilding Factory reman Smog Pump. (1000 miles)
Did a Lean Drop just before inspection (best I could). Vacuum pulling a steady 20-21 in at 650 idle.

But have not looked at the AI system in a loooong time. Will go through it as soon as the bloody rain stops. Man, I know we need it, but I am sick of the rain.

Thanks again and I'll post up results of retest.

Just an update: Started to go over the AI system yesterday, and first thing I found was the bottom hose to the ABV was disconnected. Must've knocked it off doing the lean drop...

Still going to go over the whole system.

Checked all components in AI system per FSM and everything, ABV, ACV, VSVs, VTV, both check valves, seem good, with one possible QUESTION:

The test for the VTV and ASV requires pulling the hose to the front of the Air Cleaner and cutting vacuum from the VTV (see pic).

The volume of air (small) out the front hose does not seem to change ... VTV checks ok, and separate tests on ASV check OK... Any ideas? Pressure relief valve ?

OK - pressure relief valve it was.

Lots of residual crap not allowing the valve to close - so most of the air pump volume was just going back into the air cleaner

Kind of a cheap super charger !!

And for good measure, I removed the entire ASV, ACV assy and took it apart, cleaned it, lubed, then blew it out. Now the test above works as it should. I had a couple other PRVs in the shed and all were fubar'd worse than the one on the truck, so I'd suspect this is reasonably common thing on 25 y.o. LCs with this smog set up.

As an addendum for anyone who will be taking the ACV apart, be aware the screws are in very tight and you'll need a JIS screwdriver and a little heat to avoid buggering the fasteners.

Off for the retest on Monday !!!

The Relief valves are known to fail (After 20+ years). Pull it out and test it. They are available from Napa. Jose had a part number posted in a similar thread.

That's good to know, Peter - I did pull it out and cleaned it and it seems to be working fine now, but if new are available....

Can't find Jose's posting, and NAPA's website is SH!T - so I'll PM Jose - maybe he remembers the # It'll be good to have it as a cross-post.

According to the EPC, that valve is only available with the entire ABV, ACV assy ... So I don't have a Toyo part # to cross.

Thanks!

I found his post ....and the part number is from your reply to him but its for a check valve NOT the bypass valve. Sorry! I may have a good one sitting around, I will check.

Either way you will pass smog now. You can always check if the ABV is working just by using the IR thermometer on the cat. Typically the cat wont "light" without the extra o2 from the pump. When it does "light" the output temp of the cat will be 200 deg hotter than the input temp.

Yes, will retest today or tomorrow and will post new results.

And I would add that anyone who still has to have smog controls, disassembly and cleaning of the ABV assy including the Pressure Relief Valve is a must after 25 years!

And it really is a good learning experience to go through the emissions systems component by component. Certainly gives you a less intimidating view of that voodoo. But all in all, I still wished I lived in a non-smog State!

I replaced mine with some head screws.
Btw, which one is the PRV?

Mother Fugger -

These are the times that try mens's souls...

So I went for the retest and now she blows worse than before...

Fugg --

Residual O2 still Zero. Could the Air Injection nozzles be plugged ? Only about 3-4K on the engine and the nozzles were perfect when installed.

And the Smog Tech said he couldn't believe it 'cuz the thing is running beautifully.
