I'm looking at possibly adding a winch on the ole' girl and was set on getting another Warn 8274. Today I started looking a little deeper and discovered the factory PTO winch. What are the pros and cons of the PTO versus the 8274?

Just my opinion... PTO winches are cool, but need a lot more parts to make them work. Gear box, shifter, driveshaft and u-joints, winch. You'll need the brackets to hold the driveshaft off the frame and the extended frame brackets for the bumper. All hard pieces to find or make. The shear pin is another worry, I drilled mine out for a larger dia. pin, they're prone to snapping too early.

I went through a lot of work in order to get one mounted, but it can be done. The PTO will work all day if that's what you're needing, no worries of over heating or running down the battery.

Just my opinion... The 8274 is just as cool and can be rebuilt with updated parts to make as good as new. You'll still new the extended frame brackets and a second battery would be better, just for the winch and other stuff. Electric winches do get hot when worked too long.

Just my opinion... PTO winch in front, just because and a streamline electric winch in back, to get you the hell out of what you're in!

Look in my thread for some information on the PTO, Pablo's has some good pictures too.

Well, the 8274 is a more simple solution but is it strong enough for these overweight pigs?

Plenty strong. Tucker has one on his and I don't think he had any problems. The 8274 has been the work horse of winches for a long time.

I had one on my 40 and I k ow tough it is, but these rigs STOCK weigh 6,000 lbs. once they are loaded with people, hear and a full tank of gas, it's reaching 8,000 lbs, which is the capacity of the 8274.

That's going to take a lot of fuel and people to get to 8000. The 55 has a Curb Weight 3990 to 4030 lbs according to TLC.

there is a recovery thread on mud that is full of fun things. Maybe a search would yield some answers.

Just stopped by the dumps and weighed the doomer. 5200 with chevy running gear, big tires and full roll cage and a bit of tools in it.
