Trust me, I have searched and searched and searched.
I have a 83' 40 USA market with factory AC and about 2 days ago all air stopped working. My heater, fresh air fan, and my AC just stopped working. I have a factory wiring diagram and have checked every fuse and every ground and all seems to be functioning properly. I also have a 82 with factory AC and have switched out various parts to see if that would help, but it has not. If anyone has had this problem or can point me in the right direction in troubleshooting I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Isaac.

broken wire and or harness somewhere? the heater fan and a/c fans are completely different from each other.

at least they are in my 1980.

Ice cold again. After ripping out the dash I found an (aftermarket) fuse.

Did you move the fuse so it's easier to reach now? :D

I got rid of it all together. It just went to the fuse bar and had an extra one in-line to piss me off. There is nothing like working in the heat and on your back across the rocker panel trying to get your AC fixed. Now I just need to figure out how they ran these running lights that don't work.

Sure its aftermarket? Because there is a factory one behind the radio taped to the main harness that runs across the firewall.

I am not sure. It didn't look like a factory in-line fuse. But I am sure that it was running directly to the fuse block and that is why I thought it was redundant and not needed. I am not an expert by a long shot but couldn't see a use for it. Did I screw up?

Which side of the fuse block was the wire landed, load or line (hot side). If it's on the line side it's now no longer has the fuse protecting the wiring/motor/switch. Plus the fuse probably had a reason to blow. Was that corrected?

I'm thinking the stock in-line fuses in several places, have yellow tape wrapped around them. and they are in a black plastic "box" that opens and exposes the fuse.

aftermarket is a cylinder looking affair that you push and twist to open.

It was on the load side and the reason it blew was because someone had wired the heater/fan/AC fan all together. So when I turned on the dash fan and the AC fan it was more amperage than the fuse could handle.

It was a push and twist white fuse holder.

Thanks everyone for the responses and help. Isaac

Updating an old thread with some additional info that might be helpful to others with factory air. I have a 81 US spec FJ40 with factory AC...mine stopped working and after tearing out my radio to search for this fuse, I found nothing back there...

I was about to spend the weekend contorting my body into the front footwell to tear out the dash and find this elusive fuse when a lightbulb went off. I looked under the hood first and bingo, on left side near where the harness comes out of the firewall and leads to the fusable link, there is a blue wire with red stripe coming out of the harness into a fuse holder, which then loops back in to the harness to a white wire with blue stripe. The blue/red wire was frayed and appeared to have been shorting for quite awhile causing it to burn the fuse holder.

I cut this out and inserted a new fuse holder and its working like new. Not sure if this is the original location on an '81 or if the PO moved it to here. But its clearly easier to manage. The fuse holder is consistent with all the other single fuse holders in the vehicle (like the carb cooling fan fuse under the dash near the AC controls). Its the small white hinged door holder with round fuse terminals on each end, so I believe it is the original fuse holder and location. The black one next to it contains two fuses. Both were covered in black tape and attached to the harness.

If anyone has an original fuse holder and terminals they want to sell, please PM me...I found some close substitutes. The option from Vintage Connections looks nearest to stock:

another option in black:

looks like post 15 in this thread validates that this is the correct and original location of the AC fuse on an 81.
