More progress! Did the Saginaw conversion. I used the 4x4Labs kit. I really like how it turned out. I think I’m done with the main fab work so the next step will be to refinish the frame. I’m on the hunt for an LS with a transmission attached. If you have any leads please let me know.

How does the relay rod sit in relation to the main steering rod?

Progress! Well progress in my continuous parts hoarding anyways. I have obtained a motor. Its a 5.3L L83 out of a 2016 or 2017 GM truck. Guy I picked it up from told me it had about 3500 miles on it. It is technically a GenV LT motor. It has some unique features about it. GM went to electronic power steering when they started doing displacement on demand. In stead of a power steering pump there is a vacuum pump down there to help the brakes out when its in 4 cyl mode. I will need to delete the vacuum pump and retro fit a power steering pump on it. Next thing I had to deal with was the factory transmission. It was an 8spd automatic. I searched for days for an adapter kit to get the 8L to adapt to my 19 spline split case with no luck. Finally I was able to trade it with a guy who had a 6spd. Advance Adapters makes an adapter to get the 6L to my split case so I am in luck. Ordered GenV motor mounts and the correct adapter on Friday. Should have my frame back all painted and pretty this week. Also purchased brakes and full axle rebuild kit. Things are happening and people are doing them.

Special thanks to Mitch at swaptimeusa.com. He is the man doing my standalone harness and I'll be getting all the stuff from him to make the motor and transmission sing. Mitch is a great guy to deal with and has a ton of knowledge doing LS swaps into anything you can imagine. He has great videos on YouTube too.

Also thank you to Lowrangeoffroad.com for the axle rebuild kit and also their videos on YouTube clearly showing how to rebuild Toyota Axles.

Quick update for you all. I've been waiting on paint and parts. I have finally gotten the frame back from paint. I picked up the axles today as well as the wheels. The AA box showed up last week with motor mounts and trans/t-case adapter. I really like how everything turned out. I will be assembling the rolling chassis this week sometime and maybe getting the motor atleast mocked up in there. Enjoy some painted wheels and radiator support. Also a picture of another project we are starting and a couple more I found in a field that I would really like to bring home. The truck is a short bed Sweptline we're jamming a 24v Cummins into. It will stick into the cab around 10 inches. Should be fun to drive. More to come!!

Got a little more done today. It’s always 2 steps forward one step back. Had to knock off early today because I need a small part. I must rant a little because of the AA instructions. To call them terrible would imply that there were instructions. It’s a total freestyle type thing. I hope I’ve done it correctly. I watched a YouTube video by a company called Motech that installs LS motors in Wranglers. Also tried to glean as much as possible from pictures of others builds. In that spirit I will try to show as many pictures as possible for others. If you see something I’m doing wrong please speak up.
1 - output shaft of the 2wd transmission with tail housing removed.
2 - output shaft with seal installed. This is a seal that is present when the transmission is configured for 4wd. I also installed 2 plugs into these little oil passages. There are little freeze plug looking things pressed into these holes on the 4wd version as well. I used a 1/4” npt tap and corresponding brass plugs with a little loctite.
3 - package for the part number of the seal.

1 - here’s what the output looks like once it’s been cut down. It starts out about 6.75”. You trim it down to 4”.
2 - handful of pictures of the adapter ring bolted to the back of the transmission. Give y an idea of the length of the output shaft after it’s been trimmed.

Just a handful more pictures with the shaft adapter on there. Also a couple with the transfer case adapter on there. That will be all for today until I get this little seal from Toyota to go in the split case. I am honestly a little intimidated about cracking open the transfer case. I will do it next week once the seal shows up. I hope I’m doing this correctly.

That reminds me of my SM420 swap that I did almost twenty years ago. There was like no shaft for the input gear to ride on, so I milled the adapter plate down a bit. It seemed to hold up until I sold the truck.

New development. After talking to my man Nic who is doing the Red Dawn FJ60 Build I decided I put the bearing in backwards. Here is detailed pictures of the new correct orientation of the snap ring. Look closely to see the groove around the bearing. I had it on there backwards.

Got the axles all done rebuilding and painting. Also scored some tires over the weekend. They’re Jeep Wrangler Rubicon take offs. They’re about 32” x 10”. All 5 for $350. I like the look of them. Hopefully I’ll have a roller by the end of the week.

It was a trying week. Nobody was hurt but I still have a truck out of commission that I need to deal with. Pissed off customers and guys getting OT because they are all doubling up on their routes. Its life.

wrecked mine truck.jpg

So on top of dealing with the wreck above I was able to get the transmission married to the transfer case finally. You can see from the pictures the clearance on the front driveshaft will be close but I think we can make it. I have been watching the Red Dawn build over on the FJ60 forum and he made it work so I have confidence. The overall length of the 4spd/split case combo was in the neighborhood of 32". This is the measurement from the front of the bell housing to the rear output flange. The overall length of the new 6L80/split case combo including the adapter is about 38.5" long. Not sure yet what effect this will have on the rear driveshaft length. I am also moving the rear axle back about 1.5". Should be fun to see how it works out.

1. If you decide to sell off some of your extra parts, I'd want the original 3 speed transmission floor shifter and 4WD floor shifter- - -put me first in line.
2. If you feel the need for my 22 gallon rear fuel cell (with internal pump for your LS) lemme know.
3. If you feel the need for a righteous power steering hose kit, lemme know.
4. Looks like you need the smaller AA front upper universal joint to clear your tranny, but know that it can be machined even smaller than AA did without loosing strength, machined closer to the actual bolt pattern.
5. Since the AA seems to have no provision for the 40 pulse VSS needed for your LS engine, I suppose you will need the Stealth Conversions VSS that attaches to the back side of the transfer-case.

1 - I will be selling off quite a bit of stuff in the future. Complete original drivetrain from my '72, 4spd transmission, disassembled 2F motor complete, original steering components, 2F headers, original '72 axles. I would prefer to sell things that are complete as complete if possible.

2 - I have a brand new fuel tank and a Holley in tank retro fit tank already hoarded. I'll keep you posted.

3 - I will keep you posted on the power steering hoses. My Gen v motor doesn't have a power steering pump on it. I have a retro fit kit ordered to replace the factory vacuum pump. Once I lay eyes on the retro fit pump I will let you know. It will require a remote reservoir as well.

4 - I didn't know AA had a kit like that. Do you have a PN#? I'm interested.

5 - AA doesn't have anything for the factory speedometer. My transmission will supply that information to the right gauges. I am going to look into Dakota Digital but there may be some other options out there I'm not aware of. My ECM and TCM provide a tremendous amount of information I would like to take advantage of if possible. Where can I read about the stealth conversions VSS?
