I'm a little late to the party here... But after reading this whole thread, I noticed that no one recommended Safety Seal +Plus+ The Liquid Patch

This is the system I've been using for years in Baja...and in my experience, (10 patches do far) it is the most effective way to repair a tire in the field. The repair never leaks. Never.

I used to use just yarn repairs, but often did not get a good repair.

It's basically a typical yarn repair but uses their special goop (liquid patch) to seal the inserted yarn repair from the inside.
Their special prep cleaner-primer is wiped on the inside at the wound to prepare the surface for the goop so it will stick. And stick it does. No grinding or buffing of the tire is required.

Tire has to be dismounted.
I reseat the bead with ether (spray starting fluid).

Stuff is awesome.

some one has mentioned this before in this tread :
you definitely need a can of cement , the small tubes are too small and good only for bicycles .
on top of all I would add 1-2 tubes of good quality , Michelin or others , and ....
a poliester tread , with a good thick needle .
this is essential when you make nice long cuts on the sidewalls .
first thing you take off the tire, you clean very well the inliner.
you make a line on both sides of the cut , marking the points of holes with a marker .
each hole must distant from each other aprox 8-10 mm.
then you start sewing the 2 sides , it is tough getting the needle with the tread though , help your self with soap and pliers .
once all is nicely sewed tight , you apply a big patch on the inside with cement , cover with a foil f alluminium or light plastic film . and put a wood on top.
use the jack to apply some pressure to the wood on the tire.
go to sleep.
next morning put in the tube , blow it to the right pressure , leave it rest at least 48 hours. better in the sun .
use it , your repair will out run the tire , guarantee .

I have tied it in the middle of Sahara desert , and the tire stood up to all the necessary work , including deflating and inflating several times a day !

Ps . the cement must be changed after aprox 2 years even if the can is un used !

bye Renago
