You forgot the step where you bandage all the cuts on your hands and forearms from the sharp edges of the tank opening.

If it did, I didn't get the memo. . .

I thought this project had serious potential at the beginning, but I've written off the 20.00 :flipoff2: and still searching for a used long ranger tank made for a FJ60.

X2 what he said...not very much return for the $. At least a update of what stalled it out would be appreciated.

And don't get me wrong. I was investing in someone else doing the dirty work to help me get a big-o-tank on the cheap. Just curious as to what was the final "no go" deal breaker on the van tanks.

It's a long ass thread, but it's all in there. Long story short Jim took a long time, and it didn't work all that well in the end. Mainly the problem was venting issues.

I recomend Brown Davis, and with the dollar strong right now it's not a bad time to buy one.

Cool. Time is money and I greatly appreciate the research.

I'm good with it.

I'm still holding on to the hope that either my aftermarket 50 gallon '91-down Suburban tank can be modded to fit, or that the OE 40 gallon Sub tank will nearly drop in. Do not expect this to happen fast though. I've other issues to sort out before I can even start to look into this, like a toasted LR axle & wheel bearing.

GT- pics! :D

That looks like a great option. Completely missed your writeup.

I am waiting on a container with a 40-ish gallon either OEM or dealer-installed tank. Hopefully I can get it in and have time for testing before a May trip.

Checked with Opposite Lock a couple months back for what they want.. 1200 USD (USD!!) for their 190L main and some other insane amount to ship (USD of course).

Did anyone ever get a total cost to your door on these. Even with the strong dollar it's still gotta be over a grand. Does it have baffles or a bladder? Seems steep?

I don't think Opposite Lock make their tank any more. I found three options in Oz when I was searching a few months ago. Your $$ is good as compared to ours atm, good time fo you to buy.....

Brown Davis Automotive - 175 litre - $916Aud
www.4wdsystems.com.au - 190 litre - $824Aud
Welcome to Long Range Automotive - 150 litre - $978Aud

US customers may get 10% off those prices for GST (not sure though). I got all these prices in September 2008. Plus freight of course.

Thy got a pretty long list on the Brown site.
What 's the tank model people usually run in their 60?

They only have one replacement tank. The rest are auxillary tanks.

ohhhh... I love having input on 15yo thread...

since were up to 1800 bucks on an aussie tank, buy a new suburban tank, take it to a fab/repair shop that does tanks and radiators, and you have them move the filler neck and appropriate connections to the right locations and you dont have the issues Jim had with filling it. todays rates/cost will likely put you into it for 5-600.

Well this is interesting. Would I be correct in assuming all current generation gasser suburban fuel tanks are the same part?

I must admit that I'm confused. I suggested that I was going to investigate the possibility of a tank from my '79 or '91 Suburban fitting under my old FJ60. To the best of my memory that is as far as I ever got. Did someone else confirm the fit?

This thread is 16+ years old, nothing in here is about current generation anything, lol.

Yes, IIRC Jim C. tried this and ran into too many issues, but I haven't re read the thread to confirm if it's even in this thread.

Cliff notes: @FJ40Jim installed a Ford PU tank. Not sure which one. Link is dead at this point. Had some performance issues when tank got down to half fuel level. Also had a situation with filling the tank. See THIS post for details from him.

I had always heard rumors of doing a tank swap so I read the whole thread. HTH

Lol… ok… here’s how I know. An old fella, meaning in his mid seventies and younger than my dad would be, pulls up outside my shop asking to salvage some parts from a parts rig fj60. He’s asked for the axles before, and I’d give them to him but then if the city got persnickety I wouldn’t be able to move it. We get to chatting, and he has a tank in the back of his 60. He says it’s a mid 80s 42 gallon suburban tank. For an fj60… He pulls it out, shows where he had the radiator/tank shop move the filler bungs to, and pickup locations, (150 bucks) a box with a new pickup, etc. everything for the swap. I ask how it works. He points under his truck and says, “there’s one under here” . I look under and low and behold, there’s a 42 gallon tank with what appears to be slightly altered straps, but that part I’m not sure. He left his contact. I can buzz him and get a rundown and post it.

I just recalled this thread from back in the early 2000’s and found it.

So, Jim did a couple things wrong.

1. Limited himself to a tank using filler location, when filler location doesn’t matter if you weld. Go by shape and move what you need. Hell, you could likely use donor snippets from a 60 tank if not too rusty.

2. (This is me) he put too many bends into the neck and the length of the filler neck was too horizontal and the flow was too slow for the pump shut off. Burping was an issue, but it’s not his only issue. I have an mgbgt I have to angle just right or the backup kills the pump due to poor flow in the neck from a tight 90. Again, this was my thought 15 years ago, and I stick to it.
