Found it in the manual:

"The vehicle is equipped with a feature that automatically shuts off the
engine when the shift lever is in P with the engine running for an extended
period.

●The engine will automatically shut off after approximately 1 hour if it has
been left running while the shift lever is in P.

●The timer for the automatic engine shut off feature will reset if the brake
pedal is depressed or if the shift lever is in a position other than P.

●After the vehicle is parked, if the door is locked with the door lock switch
(P. 116) from the inside or the mechanical key (P. 555) from the outside,
the automatic engine shut off feature will be disabled. The timer for the automatic
engine shut off feature will be re-enabled if the driver’s door is
opened."

Looks l like the best way to get around it will be to put the vehicle in neutral and use the parking break. Thanks, Toyota, that will make me safer for sure.

Isn’t the best way just to lock the doors?

I believe mine (2010 LX) has also shut off after running a while. I haven't really tested it, but one time it was raining and I used remote start to help charge the battery in my trailer (yes, a poor man's generator) and after a while I noticed that the motor had stopped.

There is always a timeout with remote start. Even the aftermaket ones do this. Some can be manually bypassed, or you can set it to re-start after a period of time.

I recently had a rented, new Ford Tanger for a couple days...and EVERY TIME I paused at a light or intersection...the thing shut itself off! I truly hated it. Air conditioning would keep running, but less cold. -Imagine this happening in moab in 100 degree heat...every time you stopped at an obstacle, to spot, etc! NOT a good feature at all in my book.

I’m fine with OPTION, but the whole nanny/babysitter-truck thingwould reeeeally bug me.

I would not be the least surprised if the next gen LC had this "feature". Yes it's annoying. No it can't be permanently disabled in Techstream. My brother's '17 Highlander does this, and it's his chief complaint. There's a button on the dash where you can disable it, but only for the drive period. Once you shut the engine off, it re-enables. Thankfully there are aftermarket devices now that you can plug in that defeat the function, I helped him install one back in January and it works great. For "off road use only" is stickered on it, yeah right.

It probably can be turned off in Techstream... Mine came with the seat belt warning disabled (by the dealer at the owners request). So I am assuming all of these features are selectable.
