Extend idle time?

Anyone find a way to extend their idle time before automatic shut-off? Can this be done?
Are we talking about remote start?

Possibly. But also if you just exit the vehicle and want it to idle longer while you do things outside of it.

It will idle until it runs out of gas under those circumstances - what, exactly, do you think can be extended?

🤷‍♂️

Not in my case. The vehicle auto shuts off. I haven't timed it, but it seems to be about 20 minutes.

To clarify:
1) Car is on running as usual
2) You shift to park and idle....without ever pressing the start/stop button
3) you may or may not get "no key" beeps/alerts if you exiting rig with key
4) after 20 minutes, rig shuts off

?

What model year is your 200?

Also, it happens if I'm just sitting in the car with the key too. Definitely not overheating or anything like that. It will happen on a cool night in the driveway. Definitely a time event.

I believe mine (2010 LX) has also shut off after running a while. I haven't really tested it, but one time it was raining and I used remote start to help charge the battery in my trailer (yes, a poor man's generator) and after a while I noticed that the motor had stopped.

Weird. I rarely turn off my engine when out on the trail and have definitely idled for a long time (in a 13, 14 and 16) without the engine turning itself off. I suppose in 2020 they could have changed something to time out, but that seems like an odd change unless it was mandated by the government for emissions or something.

I believe it's now (2020 models) in all the Toyotas that have push button starting.

Linky to one article.

And from Toyota's Press Room.

EDIT: Seen the stuff on TV about people forgetting to turn their car off and killing themselves by CO poisoning? I'm guessing this is Toyota trying to get ahead. I "think" I read that the NHTSA are thinking of mandating something along these lines.

Gotta love it when companies/governments take decisions away from people.

One person poops and we all need diapers. The absolute dumbing down of the human race.

Wonder if the timer is still valid in neutral with the parking brake on.

I believe a run time limit has always been a thing for remote start, though I don’t have it and could be wrong.

Who would have guessed that the 2006 movie Idiocracy would turn out to be a prescient semi-documentary
Anyone paying attention.

Wow. That feature would be extremely annoying...especially in the weird case where battery is nearly dead for whatever reason, or starter is found to be iffy in the boonies....or where you are in freezing cold and need to sleep in the car with heater (I have done this twice in extreme cold in the boonies).

If it were mine, I would be either removing remote start, or scanning through options in the software to deactivate the shut-down...

I recently had a rented, new Ford Tanger for a couple days...and EVERY TIME I paused at a light or intersection...the thing shut itself off! I truly hated it. Air conditioning would keep running, but less cold. -Imagine this happening in moab in 100 degree heat...every time you stopped at an obstacle, to spot, etc! NOT a good feature at all in my book.

I’m fine with OPTION, but the whole nanny/babysitter-truck thingwould reeeeally bug me.

Maybe a option that could be turned off in Techstream?

Found it in the manual:

"The vehicle is equipped with a feature that automatically shuts off the
engine when the shift lever is in P with the engine running for an extended
period.

●The engine will automatically shut off after approximately 1 hour if it has
been left running while the shift lever is in P.

●The timer for the automatic engine shut off feature will reset if the brake
pedal is depressed or if the shift lever is in a position other than P.

●After the vehicle is parked, if the door is locked with the door lock switch
(P. 116) from the inside or the mechanical key (P. 555) from the outside,
the automatic engine shut off feature will be disabled. The timer for the automatic
engine shut off feature will be re-enabled if the driver’s door is
opened."

Looks l like the best way to get around it will be to put the vehicle in neutral and use the parking break. Thanks, Toyota, that will make me safer for sure.
