so pighead decided i needed to remove the corn syrup and ranch dressing from my camping gear because they were "old". the ranch was unopened and while the corn syrup said best sold before some time in 08, does it really expire? how about the unopened ranch dressing?

The corn syrup should be good as long as it still pours. If it doesn't pour, use a spoon.

I'm not sure about the dressing, but it is probably full of fats that have gone rancid.

BTW, why are you guys getting your food in order so far ahead of the event.:D

no expert but looking at them, I'd think the syrup will last forever but not so much the dressing. I'd toss the latter and experiment with the former. (Not that it's that great to start with.... isn't that basically sugar in water? :) )

We're lucky to live in a time when food is rather inexpensive and readily available. If in doubt, throw it out. Or, if you're afraid you'll get sick in the woods you can always eat it at home and refill your stash with newer food.

Call 10 friends over for a tasting party and see if anyone is willing. Honey is the only food in a jar or bottle that will not expire, AFAIK.

Now that I wrote that, I'm wondering if you mean Ranch in a bottle or an envelope of dry mix?

I am Serv-Safe certified, had to take a class and pass a test on food safety.

My verdict: NO WAY would I eat that dressing. The corn syrup is probably fine.

Expiration dates are mandated by the government, many things are good well beyond the date but use your head and your nose.

In my experience, creamy dressings begin to turn brown with age. Amazingly, they still taste normal, but look awful. If the package is sealed and not bloated and it doesn't smell, it's likely safe but not worth risk. It's not like it's expensive, replace it.
