NEW DAILY DRIVER

Things have been kinda quiet for the 80 lately and here's why...last night we brought home our new daily driver, a 2014 Toyota 4Runner Trail edition! Such an awesome truck, I love it! I know a lot of people hate the new look but I think it's Toyota's best design to-date, and the best looking 4Runner so far.

Even though this won't be doing any offroading anytime soon, I wanted to get a good starting platform as this is another truck I plan on keeping forever. The Trail edition comes with an electronic rear locker, ATRAC, Crawl Control, Terrain select, hill assist and all kinds of other electronic offroad nannies.

Since this is just a Trail and not a Trail Premium it came with the cloth seats. But it's going back for a custom leather install in a few days, chose a dark charcoal colored leather.

Only options it came with are KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic suspension), running boards, carpet mats and the sliding cargo deck. The sliding cargo deck is really slick, something I wished the 80 had:

Not too many plans for this truck aside from a 2~3" spacer lift, new wheels and perhaps some 285/70 tires. Here she is!

I love the look of these. How much are they all in?
MSRP on this one was $39,340 with the options. We got it for $37,400.

VERY NICE truck but its beyond me why Mr. T painted the bumpers silver? I guess its a tradition or something. Not many color matched bumpers in the past iirc.

Yeah it's bizarre why they did this only on the Trail editions! The silver chin is the only thing I don't like. Wish they would have left it like the SR5s which are color matched. I plan on blacking out the silver portions

very nice! i'm going to be watching what you do with the 4runner very closely as it's probably the only car i've considered giving up the 80 for.

I think the 5th gen 4Runners are the only viable new-car replacement for an 80, if you stick with Toyota at least. They're about the same size as an 80 and come with a much better engine and all the comforts from the latest century, like cupholders that actually hold cups

Sure they may not come with a solid axle up front or factory front lockers but they are very capable. I was very impressed when we went out with Ben's geared and locked 2013. Made everything look easy

i never thought I would sell my 80, but in May i'm starting a job that would just run my 80 in to the ground since it already has 225,000 on the clock. my first thought was "sorry honey, there's NO WAY i could ever sell the 80, so we'll just have to get me a little commuter car and i'll keep the 80 for weekends and wheeling".....then i got in my friends brand new f-150 and i thought "hmmm....cars have changed a bit in the last 20 years" haha. so now i'm thinking i might sell the 80 and find a used 2010/2011 trail edition 4runner.

like you said, not AS capable as an 80, but honestly, for the wheeling I do, i'm sure it would take me where i want to go. never really seen one in action though.

Yeah I hear ya! The 4Runner is for the wife to drive and our weekend car. The 80 is the offroad toy and my daily driver is an '04 Nissan Frontier. It really is amazing how far they've come. My little truck is 10yrs old and it's only luxury feature is power windows. It's a very bare bones utilitarian truck. The new 4Runners are very well thought out. Giant interiors, 120v power inverters, 12v accessory ports all over the truck, reclining rear seats, cupholders everywhere, sliding cargo deck, underfloor storage, Entune navigation with a user friendly interface and voice activated, I just love everything about this truck.

Oh and here's one that blew my mind. I felt like a caveman. Apparently with these fancy new radios you can PAUSE REWIND OR FAST FORWARD live radio. UMWAT!!!!!! It can cache for up to 20 minutes of airtime. It was embarrassing that I didn't know about this.

Yup, Ben's a new member here as well (post #396) and he just picked up a 80 too. We need an intro post Ben! Here's his thread

And I just found this rig. That's it. I think I'll be copying everything this guy did. It looks perfect!

Tell me about it. I drive a 98 Frontier XE with a manual transmission. No power windows/locks, only came with a tape deck an AC as options lol I see the new trucks out and I'm blown away by how far they have come

I am also blown away by how much any car cost now and days! I really like the trail edition 4runner but that price tag is pretty hefty. Think I'll wait till the 80 dies and get a used gx470 or lx470 with kdds. I also can't justify 18 mpg as DD, my daily commute is 80 miles round trip and it use to be more.

5 dollar gas is only one dumb a$$ away! Hahahaha

Yeah it's nuts! And if you're in the market for a 5th gen 4Runner (2010+), it makes no sense to buy used. Here's an example: 2012 w/ 40k miles, $33k http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ctd/4300256147.html

These trucks seems to just stay expensive. It's only feasible once they get really high miles on them and at that point it doesn't make sense; would have just kept our current car.
