I work/live in the city, so probably not as prepared as I used to be.

On me, wallet, 3 separate credit cards, AAA card, no cash, keys, cell.

Near me in the car, blanket, towels, shoes, sharpie, ball point, pliers, tape, some handheld defense weapon (Mag Lite or metal pipe - concealed carry is not legal here), cell charger, fishing pole, shovel.

When I travel/hunt, i pack a 'go bag' with flashlights and 2 sets of batteries, lighter & matches (will be adding a candle after reading other posts), firestarter, poncho, nuts for food, water, toilet paper, 2 compass's, 2 knives, 1 multitool (pliers/can opener), Saftey (reflective) blanket, radio with noaa weather, almost 100 feet of parachute(?) cord, and some other items I can't think of.

I have used everything except the safety blanket - I haven't had to overnight anywhere yet.

Good thread.

This thread is turning out some great information for being prepared. It appears that many are carrying minimal, but essential gear on them, relying on a supplement of additional gear, i.e. bug-out-bag, go, bag, etc... either in their truck/vehicle or at home. Obiviously, the choices are personal and gear solutions differ from one to the next, but the basics are still water, fire, and shelter for survival. The goal of this thread is to get a "cross-section" of what you guys carry and why. Maybe the format for questioning should include the line of work or profession that you are involve with to help understand the background of you selections?
A web search for "ten essentials" will yield a metric tonne of great information.
The "Ten" idea has been around since before I started back packing in the 70's.

As we have found what you do every day has a huge influence on what you consider essential. For me the biggest adventure of the day is a trip to the front office to check my snail mail box. If I do happen to get a paper cut or something equally life threatening there is a well equipped first aid box on the production floor.

One thing I have carried everywhere since I was 8 years old is a pocket knife of some description. Even when I carry a sheath knife I still have my pocket knife. I was really pissed when they stopped letting you take a pen knife on an airplane.

Another think that I add to my daily basis it's the super saver tape .. can't remember the right name .. but sure you know which one it's I'm talking about ..

Utili-key.

I wonder if the discreet "key-like" shape of the utili-key would go undetected through pre-flight screening? Any thoughts?

Benchmade AFCK
Two cell phones (two different networks)
Surefire G2 LED flashlight

In the car:
two first aid kits (getting ready to consolidate into one better one)
Camelbak MULE with 2 stowaway pots, lighter, knife fork spoon, 3 meals worth of rations and the all important coffee and tea fixings, and of course full of water
tools (for the car) and spare belts and hoses
recovery gear (chain, shackles, strap)

In the airplane:
charts
2 handheld GPS units (etrex and GPSMap 196)
satphone
SOG seal 2000 fixed blade
cotton scarf
water purification (MIOX and backup katadyn tablets)
Uncle Ben's 100% DEET
toothbrush
signal mirror (disk from defunct hard drive)
money (Tanzanian, Ugandan, and Kenyan shillings, plus USD)
previously mentioned camelbak
ALPS zephyr 2 tent
thermarest pad

Nice thread.

As stated before, what you carry is dependent on your mission.

From my experience, either on person, or in my car:

(1) multi-tool. I had a leatherman when there was only one type and it came with a leather case. And I could still cripm blasting caps with, but GENTLY.

(2) Electricians or duct tape. Used it to waterproof bags, wrap twisted/broken ankles, and hold recalcitrant personnel.

(3) Mold skin. No matter whether we jumped, swam, or rode in, extensive walking always happened. I got huge blisters in Ranger school and got cellulitis. Mold skin saved my bacon. In my car always.

(4) Bug spray. Kept the bugs away and could start a fire in a pinch.

(5) Candy. When I'm hungry or want to break the ice: "hey little girl, want some candy?"

CELICA XX

Good sluething! CountyComm has great tactical products. Although, recently I found the same aircraft mechanic braided ring at Ace Hardware. Good luck!

Would it be practical to have a "must have" list? Kind of filter down through these post and find common items pratical to everyday carrying, regardless of occupation or environment?

I'll up the ante:

On yr person: multi-tool w/knife, plus a small light, for when the moon isn't out or you're assigned to work at a place you've not been before.

Near to hand: strong tape of some kind (electrical, fiber, medical, 100mph), medical guaze, and training/ ability to use in multiple ways.

3 of the 4 physical items will pass through yr carry-on: multi-tool can be checked, or purchased at destination.

this: Kershaw Carabiner Tool Knife | Anclote Fire Equipment is a tempting item, as the tape could be wrapped around blade for flight clearance....
