As some of you may recall - I wanted some pointers on preparing myself and my 2014 LX for the 3,700 mile trip in the dead of winter with 93,000 miles on it. I had to bump my trip up a month earlier than expected and did not have time to fully execute all the PMs on the truck that I wanted to. Instead of doing brakes/pads/rotors/belts etc, I was only able to complete an oil change.

This is my wife’s DD so this was really the first time I had ample seat time behind the wheel.

I did want to share some thoughts and, most importantly, some pictures of the journey.

Truck Performance/Driveability/Operation in Extreme Temperatures

- I was unbelievably impressed with how well insulated the truck is from not only road noise, but ambient conditions. The LX had absolutely zero issue keeping the cabin nice and toasty - even at -36F (Yes NEGATIVE 36F). I felt no unusual drafts, even at 85MPH, through the door seals and had to actually turn down the heat with the amount that was being distributed throughout the cabin at minimal fan speed. I work in the arctic and the F-150s we drive never fully warm up or keep the inside warm enough to only wear base layers.

- I was fortunate to have a garage the night it reached well below -30F, however it had no issue starting at -12F without being plugged in.

- Coming from a 100 and a V8 4Runner - torque delivery is amazing. The power to weight ratio of the LX is ideal. I was able to cruise at 85MPH into a 30MPH headwind in 6th gear with minimal downshifts. The torque converter remained locked and the truck never seemed to struggle.

- I was also impressed with how unaffected it was in severe (+40 MPH) perpendicular crosswinds. My 100 and 4Runner would have been a pain to control on the highway. The LX seemed to just cruise through it.

- Cruising around mountain roads/passes, power delivery in S-4 was perfect. The car was never hunting or lacking power.

- The truck was 100% reliable during the 7 day trip. The only issue I had was a complete puncture on one of my Nokian Hakapelitta 9 studded tires. Luckily it happened in a hotel parking lot. I was able to plug it with my tire repair kit and continue on remaining 2,000 miles. These tires are the real deal.

- AHC is no joke. It’s a seriously comprehensive and impressive system. Comfort setting was incredible cruising over the icy roads. Normal and sport were great when I felt like playing around. Functioned flawlessly in the extreme cold, although I did not want to play with the height adjustment.

- Cupholders are worthless (BH3D mod did not arrive in time for trip).

- The fairing on the tailgate is pathetic. The back of the 200 becomes disgusting from road debris. My 100 and 4Runner stay significantly cleaner due to the addition of the fairing that directs airflow down the tailgate to prevent/minimize debris accumulations.

- Windshield was smoked due to rocks. Replacing with OEM this week at the local dealer courtesy of State Farm.

All in all it was a pretty easy trip and I was very impressed with how the 200 did.

Pics to come.....

Wow, what great scenery! Thanks for the post! Glad it all worked out so well for you.

The views!

Incredible scenery! Seeing these views makes me push Alaska up on my punch list. I can't imagine a better ride to do it in - quiet, steadfast comfort and capability.

Makes me re-think whether I really want to "upgrade" to a Cybertruck that may not be able to traverse these types of vast remote expanses. The 200-series is just made for such a trip, especially with an aux tank.

What's your thoughts on an AT tire for such a trip? Summer Alaska only?

Amazing photos and scenery. Thanks for sharing!

Summer Alaska only?

I've been to Alaska in the summer. Mosquitos were insane, and we had to wear bug nuts any time we were outside.

I also want to drive to Alaska, but I'll only do it in September (of whichever year). Bugs should be better by then, temperatures will be moderate, and roads won't be as busy as in the summer months.

A husky in its element. Amazing adventure and pics.

Alaskan Malamute actually. He’s originally from a breeder in Illinois so I suppose he is going home. My wife and I gave him the best life in Alaska for the past 2 years though!!

I would be hesitant to take even a brand new AT tire on a trip like this - or for any extended winter period in Alaska. The roads are not salted and develop an icy sheen on them all winter.

I got by with my 4Runner on new KO2’s but I wanted my wife to have the confidence quality studded tires offer. I put < 3,000 miles on my 4Runner a year so it was not driven nearly as much as the LX.....

AT tires and -36f? Hockey pucks.

Nokian Hakkas all the way. Best winter tire out there period. I run a set of Nokian Nordmans (older Hakka 8 thread, but cheaper) and the difference to a winter rated "snowflake" all season AT like the KO2 is beyond uncanny.

Your pictures bring back a lot of memories. Did you take the ALCAN or did you go east and down through Minnesota? Ive driven the ALCAN 4 times now and loved it every time. Such an amazing experience that I think everyone should do at least once. Every time I drove it, we ended up in packs of vehicles. There are only a few places to stop after a days drive on that road and you end up traveling with the same people day in and out for the most part. LOTS of fun. Glad the LX did well for you. I wouldn't expect any less.

I've done that drive (Homer to northern Minnesota) 7 times / 3 winter in an LC. You were smart to carry extra fuel. In winter a lot of the gas stations are closed. Fun trip any season.

ALCAN - crossed at Portal, ND.

What an awesome trip! Loved the pictures and glad you had a relatively uneventful drive. Trips like that are what the 200 series is all about.
