Engine Ticking/Tapping Sound at lower RPM's...

mine is about the same in the pix both.

You could, if your going to have the motor out though, why not just replace all of them ? Rockauto sells the Japanese made Clevite bearings. You can do mains, rod bearings, and the thrust washers for less than $100. Once the motor is out of course.

No interest in pulling motor until ready for V8 swap in 3-6 months, just want to keep the 1FZ running reliably until ready ready for the V8 swap.

I don't understand, you asked about just replacing the #2 bearing. Were you planning on doing that with the motor in the vehicle ?

I just spoke with the mechanic. He said oil pressure is not sufficient and a new oil pump should remedy the ticking sound. He advised that the ticking sound is the lifter on the #2 cylinder. Feeling much better at this point...

There are no hydraulic lifters on a 1FZ-FE. They are solid lifters and more oil pressure is not going to change the valve train. The Toyota owners manual shows oil pressure indication to be normal at anything above the bottom line. Without a real gauge, anything else is just guessing.

That is why I said I feel better at that point...haha The mechanic did gauge it direct but I don't have the actual readings. He said the oil pressure was not sufficient and that the sound was #2 lifter. So, do you suspect being that the lifters are solid that the sound is not from the lifters or could it be the lifters and the shims need adjusted? What actual oil pressure readings would be normal to determine if the pump is functioning properly.

I received confirmation yesterday that my 96' FZJ80 needs a rebuild or a used engine swap. My mechanic dropped the pan and advised that 2 cylinders were pretty beat up along with the crank shaft. Rather then lament my bad fortune, I am going to look at the news as an opportunity to upgrade to a 4.7L 2UZ from 1998-2002 UZJ100. This would be a complete swap of the power train including the engine, trans, xfer, ECM, and wire harness.

The stumbling block that seems to keep interested parties from seriously pursuing this swap despite all the advantages is the lack of a pre-built wire harness to complete the swap. I have already confirmed with a custom wire harness shop that has agreed to build the harness for $1,200.00 per harness with a group buy in of at least 5 harnesses.

I started a Group Buy thread at Wire Harness - Group Buy_FZJ80 Swap UZJ100 4.7L v8 powertrain

PM me if you would like to buy in and i will keep an update of the number of interested parties willing to commit to make this happen.

Would not the leak down test shown the "beat up" cylinders (less compression)?

Would a Blackstone oil check been of any value in this case?

Perhaps, but my mechanic already had the ticking sound isolated to the #2 cylinder, so dropping the pan was next logical step according to him.

I have had multiple "mechanics" tell me I've got a "lifter going bad" or "a knock". The first time one told me that was in 1993 when my 80 was a year old. I too have the sewing machine/diesel/tractor motored 3FE. She just keeps on a ticking... :meh:
my 92 fj80 sounds like a sewing machine too lol
