Fellow Baker, I too had a clatter like you describe. It was the timing chain slapping the timing cover. Went to replace my timing set and guides and turned out the chain tensioner had seized and wasn't fully tensioning the chain. New tensioner was added to the timing job. No clatter since.

To describe the sound the best way, it sounded like a diesel. Is the timing chain a tough job to do? My Land Cruiser is my daily so unfortunately i need it just about every day

Timing chain requires you two take off the cylinder head and bottom 2 oil pans. I had the same chatter. Replaced chain tensioner first which did not fix it. Removed head. Chain was stretched. Timing chain guides were worn. Just about done putting it back together today. Did all the "while you are in there PM". Headgasket, valve seals, gaskets, o rings, injectors, hoses, phh, power steering, vacuum hoses, etc. I think it is worth doing this if you are doing timing chain. I did all work myself. Not a mechanic by trade . Shade tree. Took me total of 60 hours. I was anal about doing it right. Get a FSM. It will definitely take more than one day. Need an extra vehicle. Beno was awesome with parts he will hook you up. Get the complete engine gasket kit. Great thread s out there. Let me know if you need advise.

Yeah ill need my other car running first...and im in the process of building a new motor for it. Got too many projects under one roof!:D

Just an update on that horrific chattering sound that happened. It occurred like 3 years ago, never found the cause and has never occurred over the course of three years. Send it.

update update: never had any chatter since. Being far far more versed in automotives, It has to be something with the timing. although since I haven't heard it or had problems since, I was never really keen on tearing into the motor to find out. Sometimes I hear a metal on metal sound on startup but pretty sure it's my old AC compressor. In any event, I need to do my valve seals (sorry anyone who drives behind me), so I'll get a good look at the internals while the head's off, and will peek at my timing components. 300k odometer gang
