It is a CHORE cleaning an 8274 up and this one was substantially corroded

Don’t usually like blasting electrical components but there really wasn’t a way around it. The media is super dry so everything just got blown out really well

Stamping/production code on this one is “HR8” so if I’m computing it correctly it was assembled the 18th working day of August, either 1978 or 1988.

My guess is that it’s an ‘88 production given the fine spline drive gear on the motor. The motor is also stamped “HR8” so everything is original

Much better after a trip through the blaster

In other news…. Anyone looking for a REALLY nice Offenhauser Dual Port for an FJ40? Probably going up on the Classifieds.

11-23-1983 production date

Were you able to find new pucks for the winch brake ?
The brake pads essentially? It had brand new ones in it. Along with a new 8274-50 brake shaft and related parts. Apparently installed onto a winch full of water. So dumb

The old Warn deserved better, it’s getting there

Ok….time to weld it

DA’d it first

IMG_1993.webp

DUN. Now it needs additional sanding.

It actually got pleasantly warm here in WA today. Maybe I got a little humid doing all this welding but I tell you what, it really wakes a fella up when the high frequency TIG start hits you instead of starting the arc. Most attention grabbing incident was getting hit in the armpit 🥶

The old 8274 is in far fewer pieces now, fits great

Bumper is sanded and painted. Spent quite a bit of time and effort sanding it. The goal was a bumper that fit fairly seamlessly with the rest of the OEM chassis and doesn’t look ridiculously dumb. I believe we’ve achieved that

Painted, going to give it several days to dry before mounting the 8274 for good

Thanks. I pity the FO (future owner) that ever wants to remove it 🤣

It's a commitment for sure. Been there, done that. Looks good.

Wrapped up the bumper, winch and steering box today. Box is from RedHead Steering

Good as new!

Tested the winch and it works great. Waiting on the synthetic line currently

So this more or less wraps up my involvement. Chassis will likely go back to Ed’s this weekend and the body will go out to the blaster. 👍

I know this has got to be a dumb question and I'm just sure you already know the answer, but just in case....
You have turned those tires to make sure they don't hit the bumper, right?
From your first picture of your bumper build I thought they'd hit. Especially in compression.
But maybe it's just the angles, maybe its just me.

Oh yeah, it’s just the goofy camera angle distortion. It’ll clear 37”s easy and he’s shooting for 35”s

Just for clarity… those are 33’s and the clearance is around 5” to the bumper when turning

40’s helping 40’s 🤣 Chassis is with the sheet metal/body guy now

Oh look what fell out of the back of this dodgy old Dodge! MINT

IMG_2073.webp

Nope, definitely not mint. But OH the patina

For those that may be wondering….we need to swap cowls on Ed’s existing tub. The yellow one that we fit on there was obviously rolled, to the point that attempting to fix it doesn’t make sense.

Passenger “A” post is horribly bent which means a variety of door issues there. Passenger cowl is caved in, all along the lower dash is bowed in, huge dent at the instrument cluster where I’m hoping someone’s noggin didn’t cave it in.

So… this is the cowl from the ‘72 he had out in his yard. Rockers were/are completely toast but what we actually need seems pretty solid.

Tearing it down so this and the rolled tub can go to the blaster this week

For those that know how bad the windshield screws are always frozen, this is the tool. Assuming the PO hasn’t ruined the Phillips head already this WILL get them out. Do I use a JIS bit? No. Did I wear double hearing protection and drive the neighbors inside during dinner? Yes 🤣
