IMHO from what it looks like in the pictures...it looks like it was from 2 different batches of canvas when constructed...they wouldnt have been all constructed from one common batch. the main roll section was cut from one roll probably and the flaps and tool pouches were from a different batch...remember these were all constructed with assembly lines workers there were probably bin fulls of canvas tool pouch pieces and flaps and main sections...etc.

looks to me like somebody ran it thru the wash...it's very washed out...it would have been an OD #7 for sure...a very common and readily available material at the time...and a color that they were using for the canvas tops....it was vat dipped and would have had a kinda gray look to it as well

here are some pictures of the od gren of that time...korean war era...the uniform would have been green as these un issued pouches....but...this is how it looks when washed and faded.

also a bit later ...but...much greener od 1963 top fj43

it all depended on who vat diped them...how long they stayed soaked ...and the quality of the dye would depend on how they fade.

not to detour from the tool roll, but that's an interesting set-up for the licence plate and lamp with the soft-top ambulance doors? like the fender mirrors as well

the soft-top side windows also look to be hard material with screw together trim? also has the wider rear step

with those tail lights and the door openings it must be a '63, nice backup light too

Took some pics today.

Pic 1 is #8 18oz treated. Cropped a part of the pic earlier and tread (dot) count is pretty far off. too big

Pic 2, 3 10oz (I think) is the one I thought was going to do it but i cropped it too and the thread count is off too. too small.

PS i was reading about early military OD and found out that during the color transition from OD#3 to OD#7 alot of the older OD#3 was still used so that the material was not wasted. Could my roll actually be two toned OD#3 and OD#7???

Also does anyone know if this stuff shrinks when washed?

Try to find double fill canvas versus single fill.....thats what's making your thread count so specify accordingly, then get samples.....I think you'll find something around 12 ounces in a double fill is perfect.....

Yes it will shrink........Depending on how its treated, you can try to preshrink it......If it has paraffin based treatment (waxy) you can iron it but put a thin cloth over the canvas to protect the iron....Use steam......ventilate.....

If not a paraffin treatment - put it in a tub of water......rub canvas so it'll absorb.....roll it as you take it out the tub.....drain...don't wring out......take outside/preferably and hang on a line or lay on a trampoline if you have one........leave overnight to dry/shrink......bring in next day - Iron if necessary/no steam.......Measure before you preshrink then afterwards to get a gauge of shrinkage....
It should shrink in one direction of the thread more than the other.......

As far as color - realize that the new samples you have will be the greenest they will ever be right now....they'll immediately start fading just because of the UV light they're getting......OD Green (whether #3 or #7) will fade to a khaki like color in a matter of weeks in the right conditions......

If your tool roll was folded/rolled or part was partially exposed, it would have faded accordingly...Its almost impossible for it to fade uniformly.....

Hope that helps......

I used a batch of coated WWII OD green from:
https://www.beachwoodcanvas.com/index.cfm

when I made my rolls. I also knocked out 3 factory like canvas tops using a JDM 1980 BJ40 top as a template.

Tool cards:
I could not source Toyota adjustment kits nor was I going to reprint owners manuals so I simply changed the text to say misc.

Bag Stamps:
I had "toyota made in japan", "TEQ", and a large format number stamp (plus the evil canvas ink, beware!!!!!!!!!!!) for the project (now @ Sean's ---67cruiser)

best of luck on the project.

OK heres the final product. What do you guys think???

Forgive me for being very anal about details, but some of the tool descriptions on your card are not vertically centered in the individual cells....some are slightly higher or lower. You may not care, but you asked what I thought! :meh: Otherwise, it looks awesome.

I am definitely in for one of the tool rolls (and the card) when they're ready.

BTW, my dad's original roll from his '67 was all one color......

Thanks for the link. I just ordered some samples. Will check it out once the get here. Do you remember what weight you used? Im guessing the #8??

As for the lists I'll try and fix that. Not sure why it printed like that. Thanks for the heads up.

They're good guys there......It helps to have one of them on the phone when you're navigating their site....They can tell you what to put in the search engine which is sometimes different than what you'd normally search for.......

OK if you look very closely the text is actually slightly higher than centered. I made the corrections. will post new pics tonight.

Quick question. Does anyone here know if the old canvas rolls come with fire resistant treatment or were they just water treated??? also here is a pic of mine next to a very well preserved roll. Thanks wesintl

Wes could you give your roll a sniff an let us know if it has that chemical smell?

I wouldnt think they'd have been fire retardant.......water resistant at best.....Any smell would have been from the water resistant treatment if any......probably paraffin or maybe oilcloth....

Oilcloth = Flax by product = low odor
Paraffin = petroleum based = high odor

You can actually make your own oilcloth by placing raw canvas/duck in linseed oil a few times until its saturated......let it dry (as much as linseed oil will).....

How'd the samples look?
