If you look at the engine number on the block it will start with either F or 2F and that will tell you which one it is.

1. F [or 1F]
2. F [or F.5]
3. 2F

It's not really that simple.

Your first picture is a F engine but not all F engine were the same this one if in a FJ40 is a F135. The FJ25 had both the F135 and earlier a F120.
Your second picture is a F engine but not a F155 from a 74. It is a F145 or F155 pre 72 model. Not really clear when the change was from F145 to F155. May have something to do with the carburetor. The 74 F155 would have a new oiling system that carried over to the 2F. The one you pictured has a oil fill tube on the right side. That went away with the 71 model. The easiest way to know if it a 74 model F engine the serial number will start with F not 2F and have a spin on oil filter in front of the distributor. 74 was also the last year of the steel valve cover but those could be changed with a 2F aluminum one. Starting with the 75 model the FJ4X had a 2F. Unlike the F which had sub numbers these were all just 2Fs even thought there were changes over the years. Believe the one you posted a picture of is from the eighties.

Progression of the F engine... and some pictures :)

These are the ones I know... They based the number of the F engine on HP

the first pic is of the B engine 85 HP before that it was 82HP

Nice one lads! Turns out I learnt my engine type stopped in '71, making it an F145/155. Which makes sense as it's a '69. I'm gonna tell people it's an F145 cause it's a helluva lot cooler. :grinpimp:

You guys rock...thanks ...mines a 1973 fj 40 1f just fyi...I've shown some folks my FJ and they always seem surprised it's 1 f? What's up with that?

Didn't realize Toyota had "F125" and "F130" in their line up. Although decal looks like "F139" in picture #4?

Can anybody identify this engine. It is a 1973 Costa Rican fj40 but it has four speed transmission

If you have a remote oil filter you are pre 9/73. If you have an oil filler tube you are pre 9/71. Since your pic shows a valve cover with no cap, it’s safe to assume you are pre 9/71.
