Started doing the drawer system today. I was going to do it later this year. Got tired of constantly shuffling stuff around so I started now. Basically using 3/4" plywood for the sides and 1/2" for the top and bottom.

The reason why I am building instead of buying is because I can't quite find anything here in the US that I want. And I save a s*** ton of money.

1. I want a place to store a table.
2. I want a very large drawer with smaller inserts as well as movable partitions.
3. Pull out kitchen with pantry.
4. When not camping, I want to remove the kitchen and replace with a drawer.

I like multifunction and multipurpose. The fridge will be placed on top with a drop down slide. Not sure which one to go with or just make one. They seem simple enough to build.

I have a couple sheets of baltic birch plywood lying around so I started cutting. I don't have any plans. Im just winging it and making s*** up as I go along.

Started with the bottom piece followed by the risers. It goes as wide as the wheel wells allow.

Next I routed a 1/2" groove 5cm from the bottom. I figure this will be stronger than just using screws and glue.

Then added the platform on which the drawer will sit. The slot underneath will be for a table which I have yet to make.

Next I mocked it all up. I wanted the top of the drawer to line up with the top of the tailgate.

Next step was to take it all out and add the pocket screws and glue and screw the whole thing together.

Next is to lift the box into the cruiser and start building the drawer. Then I ran out of material. So this is as far as I have gotten.

As you may have noticed I opted not to use any drawer slides. I find that they take up way to much space. Yeah each one only takes like 3/4" to an inch but multiply that by 4 you have a ton of space wasted. I decided to use teflon instead. Teflon sliding on Teflon has the lowest drag coefficient of any man made material. Plus I don't have to worry about the pesky weight limits of the damn slides. And I don't have to service them. And my drawers are wider. And I saved a s*** ton of money not buying those damn sliders.

The top and the sides will be covered in marine carpet. The insides as well as all the drawers will be covered in felt.

The fronts will be smooth with a lockable paddle latch.

Im still designing the kitchen part in my head. :D

Good choice on no slides imo.

I pulled the plastic covers on the sides of the trunk and was really surprised by how much space is in there. What do you guys do with all that space?

i would suggest doing something like a locking rabbet for that drawer front. At least move it so it is within the frame of the drawer box and puts screws nails in shear vs depending on glue/nails/screws longitudinally. Just a suggestion....

I'm planning to cut a profile for the edges. If you have a compass and a bandsaw, it should be easy to cut a template and then router out copies.

I like the no slides idea! Are you securing the box to the floor somehow?

@ZeGerman - nice! It doesn't look like you are wasting any space! Just don't get too much sawdust on that Bentley!

Im putting in a spring loaded thingamajig similar to a door. It will only go so far. To go further you need to push it down. There are a couple bolts in the back that I will be using and right behind the rear seat there are tie downs which I will utilize to secure this thing. I will do the scribing tomorrow to make the fillers, then decide what to do with all that space :grinpimp:

Too late for the glorified BMW. Its covered in dust now :hillbilly: I only have love for the Cruiser now.

lol I don't think youre allowed mention wanting to save $$ in the same sentence as a pic with a Bentley in your garage.

That being said get after it! I've been itching to get started on my drawer setup as well.

Are you not worried about the drawers getting bound up without the slider rails once theyre loaded up? Coating or not.

Nice set-up. I really like the table "slot", I think when I do my "final" version, I'm going to incorporate something like that. A couple questions, please excuse me if they seem stupid!
1) when you apply the Teflon, do you just do a 1"-3" strip on top of both drawer sides, and the same on the matching surface of the box? Does it come in rolls?
2) are you using that for a sleep platform also? The reason I ask, it seems very high, will the second row lay down "flush" with the top of this set-up?
Thanks! And keep pushin on..... I can't wait to see the kitchen area! Good luck!

I was hoping someone would knock out my setup ;)

I like that! I'm taking it to mount inside the "empty area" to allow for the mounting of different "light weight" items? Really cleans up the area, and gives us useable space! When's the release?

Is it done yet? :flipoff2:

LOL! Its by saving the 5 bucks that you eventually can get other toys. Im not too worried about it getting bound up. I had my wife get in the drawer to see how it would flex and all seems well so far. Plus the drawer will become more stable once the dividers are in place.

I just never really had a place to put a table. Under the roof rack always ends up in this whistling at highway speeds and the table gets absolutely nasty in rainy weather when going through muddy or dusty areas. This solves that issue and its one of the first things I can pull out so I don't have to place stuff on the ground when rainy.

I have space under the drawer which will allow for a thick teflon strip. In the carcass I will place the same width strip so the drawer will slide teflon on teflon which will make the entire thing openable with one finger when fully loaded.

I thought of making it the same height as the rear seat when folded down, but that results in a much shallower drawer system. Plus it did not work for the kitchen and pantry I have planned. If I were to do a sleeping platform, I could very easily add another table slot to act as a platform extension to serve as the sleeping platform. Depending on the kind of trip, I will either be using a roof top tent or an off road trailer setup.

I will be working on the kitchen this coming weekend.

Spray it with Fluid Film then Kydex Panel to match the center console
