Poncho has quit eating much of anything the last 3-4 days. I took him to the local banfield vet in petsmart (open on sunday) because I was worried he was stopped up. The ran test, stuck a rod up, and said he wasn't obstructed but had pancreatice. Researching on the web has only made me paranoid about various things that could be wrong and I was hoping for some good mud advice. He only eats dog food (costco and blue buffalo) and the occational egg with his food so I am surprised at the pancreitice?

HELP

Any vomiting? Lethargic? Puppy or older dog? If the dog isn't eating, then you need to keep digging at why - xrays? - does the dog ever eat socks, rocks, etc? BUT you also need to address his supportive care and concern for dehydration due to decreased intake of water and nutrients - IV catheter and fluids, IV antibioitics. Sounds like you need to take him back to the vet for additional workup and care. This becomes more critical as his degree of lethargy increases. Pancreatitis is a difficult diagnosis but treatment is GI rest, fluids, and antibiotics. Hope he makes a turn for the better. I love chicken and beef baby food (Gerber Stage 2) for a bland diet in MOST dogs that don't want to eat - if they don't eat baby food or throw it up then they are sick.

Thanks!!! Airedale about 100lbs. He is a little over 2. He doesn't eat socks, etc. I boiled some chicken and he loved it. Of course he didn't touch the $48 GI special food. I'll try the baby food too. He has been drinking and peeing a bunch. I also started him on pedialite today. He doesn't seem to be dehydrated (pee's several times a day and when I pinch skin on shoulders it returns immediately) .

If he's eating boiled chicken, etc. then let him eat it as long as he keeps it down.
If he ate anything with "gusto" then maybe he's on the way back to his normal self. On a scale of 1/10 with 10 being normal - where is he? Does he come running when you come home? If he's >5 and wagging his tail when you come through the door then I would wait it out and feed bland foods he's willing to eat. If he's down and out on his bed all day - then you need to be more aggressive with supportive care while you try to figure this out. For most two year olds, it's usually that they've gotten into something they shouldn't. The fact he ate with eagerness really eases my concerns. Specific diagnosis will be difficult to pin down - but as long as the dog is eating then I think you're justified in trying to nurse him through this with a bland diet.

We met at a cookout in SC one time when I was returning from Atlanta with an axle for the 40. Please let me know if there are any specifics I can try to answer. I'll keep my fingers crossed that all continues to go well.

I remember ya now. I use to live in Davidson. He is about a 6. He is back to chasing birds, but still isn't overly bouncing off the walls when I get home. He has kept the chicken down. He ate it with gusto, but I was afraid to give him too much so I limited it to about a cup or so. I plan on repeating in the morning. Wish you were closer to Atlanta...would be nice to have a cruiser vet nearby.

Well he just lost part of the chicken...looks like I'll get him back to our regular vet tomorrow

Bummer! Sounds like your dog may need a little more work-up diagnostically. Hopefully they can get him turned around for you. Would love to hear an update after your visit. Good luck!!

Blockage in intestines, prayers welcome. He is in surgery now. I'll know more tonight.

Glad they were able to figure it out!!! And it's fixable - so that's good! Just sux that he has to go through surgery to get better. Might need to revisit that "he doesn't eat socks and rocks" statement. Time to start guessing as to what item they'll find. Urban legend - they pulled a thong out of one dog and the family was presented with the "treasure" but they wife exclaimed, "those aren't mine." Reports are that they are no longer married.

Hope your dog sails through surgery and that no incriminating objects are found :)

As said above rawhide is NG, small bones. rubber chew toys, small fleece toys, My dog stopped eating last november and it was a hemosarcoma in her spleen it was the size of a softball,we put her down because it was cancer.Good luck and I hope your pal pulls through fine.

Poncho's back home, I'm exhausted and beyond broke. He is starting to eat on his own and hopefully on the road to the recovery.

Glad your dogs on the road to recovery! Did they figure out what the blockage was? My 15 week old Dob has lots of toys, eats raw hide and I'm constantly trying to stop her from eating rocks and pecans! Seems to be a loosing battle on my end. Let us know how your doggy is doing.

Sent from deep in the mountains of Honduras using only sticks and rocks.

He has eaten all kinds of stuff - flower pots, rocks, toys, ear rings, crayons, etc. But this looked like pieces from a missing spatula, fly swatter and wiffle ball. I'm guessing a piece managed to get stuck sideways in just the right spot because I've seen bigger things in the back yard. He seems all better now, his stitches come out this Friday. His stomach looks like a football with all the stitches going from his junk to the lower edge of his ribs. FYI we stopped the raw hides after a couple of issues with him barfing.

I hope nobody else has to go through this....pretty exhausting and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Between this and my twins getting braces it looks like my cruiser is going until the money situation gets better.

My 9 year old golden at a whole roll of toilet paper when she was a small puppy. We almost lost her. $2100 dollars later and all was good.
