my dog weighs in at 120 lbs and my vet told me 1 asprin (and 2 glucosimain) twice a day. NEVER i/b/profane, supposed to be deadly to dogs.
he has been on them for the last 6 months due to screwed up hips, doing quite well as long as he doesn't do any jumping or hard landings.

The Good Doc told me that Ibuprofen is deadly for dogs, she says it causes liver failure, and kidney problems. She recommended Rimadyl. What ever is in those pills works. I have a four legged friend again and he is getting back to normal.
If you gotta give your dog a pain med, then Baby Aspirin is OK. However, you have to let two days go by before you give them Rimadyl.

I thought it was one glucosimain per 80lbs once per day and one asprin every 12 hours (if needed). Looks like my Ruby is in the same condition as yours plus she's got these big fatty cell tumors. She doesn't like to walk more than a 1/2 block. Maybe I need to see another vet about increasing the glucosamin? Still what i have her on now has helped her navigate the stairs and has helped my back cause she's a heavy bch to lift.

the vet i use is in Alberta, i used him for 9 years and when the last dog was dieing i went to see him. he takes a look at the distended belly, rapid breathing and says "he is dieing so take him home". i thought NO WAY, put him down and out of his misery. he forced me to take Billie home and the next day all was well. i was able to spend the last 2 weeks with him till the tumour caused internal bleeding again and he died in our arms. i loved the vet for his honestly.
when Cruiser had his ups and downs the same vet would put my mind to ease each time. he would make tiem for me and good news or bad it was delivered in a profesional mannor, never any fear mongering or BS. the billing was more than fair. you could tell he was in the proffesion because of his love of animals and not just for the money.
when i moved to Ontario i forgot Cruisers and Billy (#2) paperwork for crossing the border into the states, i called him and 10 mins later the paperwork was faxed down, NC.
Cruiser hurt his hip jumping into the truck and i call him. i was a wreck, Cruiser was dragging his leg behind him and i thought for sure this was it. he answered the phone right away (and with his qualities you can guess how busy he is), told me to do the above and to call him back in a week or so. when i told him it was working he just said "keep doing it and if it gets worse call me and i will prescribe some antirumatism prescription pills" all this from 3000 km away.
then Cruiser got in a wrestling match with a local dog and tore his dueclaw. after a couple weeks it got infected so i called him up. he told me to go to the local clinic to get checked out. the lady there asks (with in the first couple minutes) "have you considered cancer" WTF?
let me get this straight, you are telling me a torn duclaw can go cancerous in 2 weeks?
"well no, i am just saying..."
sorry, i am not into fear mongering.
she prescribed some pills and the bill comes to $300, ouch.
i phone the vet in Alberta and ask him to verify the prognoses and he agrees to most of the stuff she suggested except the $110 pills. he says take them back and go to the loacl pharmisist and get them to call him for authorization. 15 mins and $24 later i walk out. Cruiser healed up perfectly. the vet probably thinks he is doing this probono but he will be surprised next month when i am in Alberta and drop in on him with a tim's muffin pack and coffee and a pic of the 2 dogs.

i trust him with my dogs life, very few people in my life have earned that kind of trust.

rambling over and back to bed.

I hear ya'

I have a certain price tag in my head, as to what I will spend on my dog. When he got run over by a train when he was 6 or so, I happily forked over the 800 bucks to get him patched up. When he got worms due to the fleas, another $250. This ankle deal cost me $236. No problem. Had it been a total leg blow out and I had been choosing between $4000 or to put him down, he'd be a goner.

Just sayin'.

There are a billion good dogs that need good homes out there. If my rescue dog only makes it 12 years, than so be it.
I'll wait a few months, maybe a few years, and then find another Border Collie, or an Australian Shepard. I might even get another one soon, so that Uncle Argo can teach the new guy how we do it in Mattlock-Town.
Actually, I am thinking about getting a Jack Russel or a Corgi.

Maybe both.

I do love dogs...

well it wasn't the cost that was the issue, it was the attitude of the vet.
when i asked her "how long haqve you been a vet?" her answer was "too long". what this tells me is she is forced to do her job, that her job does not bring her pleasure and that she is in it for the money only.
i told her straight up during the inspection "i am cold towards you since i know we all get out of bed to make money, i just want to know if i am getting bent over or not."
i took the pills back solely on the premise of not being bent over, not because of the cost.

Any thoughts?

Yes - take your dog to a first rate vet that can assess mobility and manage pain.

DO NOT try to administer meds to your dog, ibuprofen, etc.

Do not seek medical advice on a Land Cruiser forum

So can you give a dog Ibuprofen? I will take him to a vet if he doesn't shake this off in a few days. He got hit by a train once and had over 200 stitches to patch him up. He is a tough dog. I am a little worried about him right now. Like I said, nothing seems broken, and I can't find anything in his paw, but if I fxxx with him too much, he tries to bite me, which is way out of character for him.

The reason he tries to bite you is because he is in an incredible amount of pain and you are manipulating his joints inappropriately.

Take him to a good vet now.

 is there really baby chewable aspirin?

yes: it's often the first med an EMT/ Paramedic gives to a suspected heart attack.

baby = dose
chewable = doesn't need a slug of water to make it go down

And when the bottle says it's expired, it still works as a headache reliever...

I wholeheartedly concur w/ Pablo's assessment of this situation.

None of the dog breeders or rescue groups I know would place a dog with you Mattlock, due to your cavalier attitude towards your current dog.

"he got run over by a train...
he got worms due to the fleas...
This ankle deal...
Has to be muzzled at the vets...
He usually just blows little stuff off and charges into the next foray...
Well, if not and I kill him, than that's just the way it goes. ... we have a long summer ahead of us, I can't have a limpy dog..."

Sure, it's better than being kept on a chain, but really?

He got a total of 500mg, I hope that is ok. Well, if not and I kill him, than that's just the way it goes.

Are you freaking serious? I am going to have to stop reading your threads, because you are an a-hole

He weighs 75 lbs. He is pretty tough, that is part of why I am worried about that hoof.....

Dogs have paws

You do not love dogs.

You like the positive aspects of what dogs bring your life - as long as they don't cost you too much...

Atticus you're an a******.

Muttlock is fine. Sprained ankle, that's all.

Aussie vet says I did alright, she says it would have been way more spendy if I would have brought him through the UW Vet Clinic.

I like my Vet.

X-rays show nothing is broken. As I predicted, it was an ordeal.

3 hours. Start to finish

Regular 5 minute checks by the good doc, before he came out of the sedative. He had to wear a muzzle the whole time.

Well, he is on the mend, he still tried to load up in the back of the Tundra both coming and going.

Hunh, tough dog, even on three legs...

No, Matty, you're an a******, because you won't properly care for your dog.

"My dog is hurt, but instead of taking him to the vet, I'm going to blog about it and ignore what everybody tells me to do."

Whatever. I took him to the vet, paid the bill, and am happy to have my dog back in order. I didn't ignore anything, other than the snide remarks about how I don't like dogs and I am bad dog owner. In my opinion, dogs are just dogs. I take good care of mine, maybe I don't treat him like a would a child, but he lives a pretty good life. All I was asking for initially was a little advice about whether or not I could give the dog some pain medicine before I was able to get him to the vet. Some people understood what I was asking and others, including you, decided to take another opportunity to rip on me.

I'm sure some of you think that I am an a****** for believing that dogs and actually any animal, are not on the same level as humans. My friend tried to save her Malamute a few months ago after it was diagnosed with a huge tumor that had wrapped itself around the dogs liver. It was an extremely difficult time for my friend, and I totally understood why she was willing to drain her bank account and go several thousands of dollars in debt in the process. That was her choice, it didn't save the dog though, it died right after the first surgery. I would not have done that. I would have euthanized my dog in that situation. I know it's harsh, but the reality is that dogs don't live as long as we do and that is that.

I treat my dog with respect, but all of his injuries have been due to his own reckless behavior. He is how he is, that's part of why I love him, but he does this s*** to himself. I try to control him, but things happen. He got hit by the train across the street from my old house because someone left the gate to the fence open, and before I knew it, he was out on the tracks getting mowed over by the train. I watched it happen. I felt terrible about it, but it happened. Sure, I could have checked the gate, but it was early in the morning and my normal routine was to let him out and go about getting ready for the day. There were 7 people living in the house, and they all knew that the gate was supposed to be latched at all times. Someone forgot. In five years, all it took was one time.

He got the worms and fleas when I left him in what I thought were good hands with my ex-girlfriend on the farm she lived on. When I got back from vacation, he was full of fleas that he had picked up from the other dogs and horses. I was pissed, but what was done was done, I dealt with it by taking him to the vet and getting the problem taken care of.

I don't see how that makes me a bad dog owner. If everyone was perfect and pets didn't get themselves into trouble, then there would be little need for vets.

I don't even take myself to the doctor every time I get a little owee, why should the dog go every time he gets a little dinged up? I would be in the poorhouse if I ran my dog off to the vet every time he gets a scratch, or breaks a nail, or gets his snout layed open by a cat. I took him this time, because I thought there might be something seriously wrong with his ankle. Turns out it was just a sprain. I am glad I know, but I also wonder if he would have been fine the next day, which is what happened, without taking him to the vet.

my last dog had a tumor in his gut and wrapped around some vital organs, i asked the vet what i should do "you love your dog, i know that but it is time to let him go. take him home and say goodbye"

an honest vet is an amazing thing.

i know if i demanded he try then he would have but common sense has to prevail. QUALITY OF LIFE for the pet is more important than our wants.

Fxxx you. I'll take care of my dog however the hell I see fit.

Zacklock, save us all some time and limit your responses to one line. I just said everything that you did in your novella, with one line's worth.

While growing up, for years my town didn't have a vet and the closest was about 2 hours away. So the pharmicist became the small animal vet and would prescribe and treat dogs. He did just fine when my dad ran over my dog with the one ton flat deck. My dog recovered and never chased another vehicle. Finally we got a vet in town. He was an honest vet. People didn't have money for any other kind of vet. When my old dog went off his food. I took him in and the vet told me that he had stomach cancer. I took my dog home with instruction to keep him comfortable and when he stopped moving or looked to be in a lot of pain to bring him back. A week later I was back and together we put my dog to sleep. Now too many vets are more interested in racking up the bills than interested in the welfare of the animal and its owner. Glad to here you have a winner vet there Wayne - even if he's 3000 kms away.

Agreed, but I'll tell you this - you are a lot less likely to encounter it with veterinarians vs. other professions.

They are not in t for the $

no s***. theres allot to know about allot, and i cant say ive ever been screwed by one. not only that, but they treat 50 animals a day, and gotta deal with all types, from people losing their composure, to the inevitable cost/benefit discussions that dont happen when treating humans (at least not outside the ins co claim department).

i dont think i would want that job, even if i was an animal lover.
