I'm hearing alot about the overall design, but have not heard anyone mention one issue that will really effect driving every day--the HUGE blind spots (the pillars) along the cargo areas on each side! I give the first person who buys one about 15 minutes after they pull out of the dealership before they try to move into the right lane and take out a car they can't see!

If they put glass where those pillars are, it would make a big difference in everyday driving and will probably make the look of the truck better!

Considering aftermarket support for Tacomas and Runners is ten times that for 40 series - what's not to like. Sure it could have been a hardcore wheeler but who really uses one of those, Toyota has to have broad market appeal and that usually means the purists and enthusiasts and collectors (5% of the marketplace at most) loose out. Deal with it.

Look at all the work Slee has done to make the Lexi and 100s suitable trail vehicles, try taking any of those series vehicles out of the showroom and over the Rubicon or almost any moderate trail and see what happens. Bone stock this thing probably goes more places than a bone stock 100 or 470 when the going gets tight, add enough accessories to one of the FJ Cruisers until the price matches a Lexus and I will bet the farm that it walks all over the wagons.

All this boils down to comparing apples to oranges at this point, by the time one of these hits the market and then gets a few mods and is taken to Cruise Moab - it will be the talk of the town all over again about how capable it actually is and who'd have ever thought it could work, blah, blah, blah.

I think you hit the nail on the head good analysis! I also think that within a year after it hits the showroom most people will think it is good looking and a great all round SUV. I had an 80 and use to think the 100's were ugly. Now I think the 100's are great looking. Seems like these new designs grow on you over time.

New FJ

They should've kept more of the orignal lines from the FJ. But all in all it's not to bad. I don't know if I'd ever buy one, they said it would be affordable, I wonder what affordable to Toyota is !!

I'm suprised it took so long to bring the blind spot issue up. I see that as a HUGE problem...on top of the vehicle just being too modern and ugly. It does look like the bastard love child of an Element and a Mini; that was my initial impression as well. The lines are too smooth to be tough, where are the junting front fenders that are express the FJ's manhood? The bezel is cool, even though you cannot flip it-lol, but my sister is going to want the roof rack from her Xterra back.

I see this small windowed abomination driving around with a 16-25 year old girl behind the wheel with a mountain bike hanging off the back. I mean, honestly, when you are at a cruiser rallyee and one of these pulls up to go out, won't everyone be cheering it on like the Special Olympics just amazed at what it is able to accomplish and not what you expect it to do?

P.S. that front bumper and all of the metalic looking components better be metal and not ABS b*&#sh!t like the H2 to or everyone will know it's a poser.

IMHO - no different than driving a van with limited windows

Or pulling a trailer, or driving a flatbed....I did notice than it was equipped with mirrors

A "greenhouse" cab would make it identical to the new Land Rover and with some limo tint this thing could be the Shaggin Wagon of the 21st century :D I wonder if shag carpeting is a factory option?

While I think the production model looks somewhat gay, I think that about most un-modified 4x4s.

The photoshop photos make me realize that it has a lot of potential.

I don't care who likes it and who doesn't, as long as those that do buy it join the TLCA, the local chapter and attend meetings and events.

And for all of the "purists" out there (the  is for anyone that calls themselves a purist and drives anything other than a BONE STOCK Land Cruiser), since you wont be spending 20-25K on a FJ Cruiser, you can afford to have your 40 completely restored!

So lose that lift, the lockers, the meats, the full cage and so on! Let's keep it "pure"! :flipoff2:

And don't forget your polo sweater drapped around your neck on the way to the boat club whilist slumming with the FJ owners.

You just described the HUGE majority of FZJ-80 and UZJ-100 series owners.

Actually that's a cashmere sweater, and it's for walking from the tennis courts to the wine tasting event. :flipoff2:

You left out "reserving judgement until someone actually sees and can drive a production unit"

;)

THAT'S what it looks like - a minivan with a bezel. :D Where were those hooks for the babyseats??

I'm digging it. If I had the opportunity to go buy a brand new FJ40 at a Toyota dealership, I would leave work right now and go buy one. But I don't, and this FJ Cruiser is the closest thing to a short wheelbase 40 they've sold in years. And it is body on frame, so it's far more trail worthy than a RAV4.

There's always Marlin or All-pro to do a front axle conversion, then you might reconsider? We know that it won't compare to an 80,70, 60, 55,40 or 105 series but at least is a lot better than what's available nowadays from most car manufacturers. People pay outrageous prices for all this so called SUV's that are built on auto platforms and pay out the a$$ for them. Whatever happened to what a real truck should be (UTILITARIAN) if I wanted confort and luxury then a car is the way to go. Enough ranting for me.

so your 80 is not utilitarian?

Why won't it compare to an 80?
