The shaft in my FJ45's distributor snaped . The brand new replacement distriutor doesn't adjust properly. Lots of back firing. I have removed and maticulously refitted it three times. I am unable to set it to run smoothly/properly. Please help?

The rotor should point at #4 plug when TDC on compression #1 cylinder. Due to the helical gear the shaft rotates as it seats - very easy to be one tooth off. Second is you must engage the oil pump as the dizzy fully seats.

Its in the manual.

I find it easier to use a remote starter switch while pressing down on the dizzy to rotate the engine to get the shaft to pick up the oil pump - you will feel it drop in - then tighten the dizzy clamp. Verify you have oil pressure before running it for very long.

And it’s fairly easy to get “180 degrees out”, meaning you stabbed the distributor when #1 piston is on the exhaust stroke NOT #1 at TDC. (The flywheel still lines up.. but is lying to you! 😂 ). Once stabbed 180 out you can try to time it until it runs poorly and backfires (as I recall, I know I have done that on SOME engine(s). Best to stab distributor with valve cover off so you can see valves and confirm compression stroke. It is the first thing I check if I’m going for a rescue… SA is a bit far!
