I had my 2f pulled , rebuilt and reinstalled several years ago and when I went to replace the water pump this afternoon and found out that they used a pump with an oil cooler outlet that they put a rubber cap and hose clamp on. The new pump moves the fan an inch forward towards the radiator.
My question is , if I have room and the fan doesn't hit the radiator will it cause any cooling issues? What is the correct or ideal distance between fan and radiator? I was trying to switch the flanges using a puller from AutoZone loaner program and wasn't having much luck so I figured I should ask people who actually know what they're doing first.
My pump is from Toyota dealership and is the correct one.

77 here and my water pump has the oil cooler outlet (I have an oil cooler) and uses a fan clutch. The front of my fan is about 3/4” from the radiator and the fan is roughly halfway into the shroud and I have no cooling issues.

I don't have exact measurements and numbers to provide, but, I do know that my father's orginal 1978 radiator and fan combo has quite a bit of clearance. He is able to remove and install a new fan without having to tilt or even remove the radiator.

I have a 1971 and I wanted to convert to a fan-clutch and 4 core radiator (much like your 1979). Once everything was in place (to include a 2f water pump) eveything sits really close. At this point, I am unable to remove the fan and swap it out as I please without having to drain and remove the radiator first.

I haven't experienced any over-heating issues with the close radiator fan setup. I live in a very hot/dry desert climate with zero issue. As long as your fan doesn't hit, you'll be good. If, for whatever reason, you do need to add clearance to your fan/radiator combo, you can elongate the radiator bolt-down holes. Just extend them with a metal file in the direction or the bib/bumper. But, that should be the last case scinario.

Also, if you really want to pull a ton of air, get yourself a later style plastic fan.

There's some pricey websites that sell them, but you can find them a bit cheaper elsewhere. City racer sells them for $75 new.

Thank you, that's what I was hoping to hear.

There is a version of the pump for fan clutch applications without a port for an oil cooler, but I think Aisin stop producing them over the past year. Cruiser Outfitters stocked up on them and may still have them in stock if you want to eliminate the rubber cap fix.

The one I got from the dealership recently didn't have the oil cooler outlet, so they are still available. The one the rebuilder used had the outlet that that they had to cap.

Thanks for the responses. In the end I had the wrong water pump and had to get a different one from city racer. The one I had first was a different stud pattern to mount the fan ,and it also was longer. That was the reason for the post.
In the end after getting the correct pump things went pretty smoothly and everything seems to be fine now. I ended up with a pump with studs 1 and 3/4 " apart,no oil cooler outlet and designed for fan clutch. 1977 2f Thanks again for the responses. Also I ended up about an inch from fan to radiator.
