I know, but I do have a time issue, as well as space. I have an extra AC pump from a Toyota FJ62 I was going to use but even that is a bit big.
The only real place for it is either between the turbo and alternator, which pushes it away from the engine about +6 inches, or on the other side, under the fuel pump, but until the engine is in, I won't know how much space I have between the steering box and engine. We'll see. Worst case, I have my Puma as a back up.
Besides, this isn't the project truck ;)

So for finishing of the manifold, on the last one I did ceramic coating. Cost me over $150 and lasted a year and then started to rust. This time I'm leaning towards VHT high heat paint (it costs around $25 for primer and paint and likely will last about as long on a good day)...unless someone has a better solution...that also can be accomplished in a reasonable time frame. I've dealt with a guy on a side job that does chrome... It would likely cost me around $75-100 for all the pieces, other ideas?
 
My battery was dying so I didn't get any final mock up photos, but this is it (other than a couple brackets)

Besides, this isn't the project truck ;)

A mechanical compressor will make installation/belt changing more difficult - so why not use the 12v Puma you already have and if need be - install a bigger air tank for impact gun work , etc.
 
I'm not concerned with belt changes, going to try out an electric fan on this truck, so belt changing is easy. The puma, especially in a vehicle that has pretty much non existent interior room, is a little more complicated. That air compressor has always been good, but I have my doubts it would be able to run air tools well. Not that I'm going to be using it for that. This is mainly trail air up and might do air bags down the road for the rear ;)

It's a pretty sweet York unit he has. Will be nice having all the air power we have on all our rigs......but if only we had some on board welders.......
 
Yeah my York has been great, fast tire fills and have run air tools a few times. Never had an issue changing belts, takes 20sec longer. If you have the time now its its much easier to make the engine mounting side with the engine out. Then position the compressor when its in the engine bay.

If you do some searching on Sandens there are a few that are short in length and still supply a good volume of air. Hardest part is finding the right fittings.
 
After some personal debates I decided to go with on board air in the form of an A/C compressor.
I needed to build a new tensioner bracket for the alternator anyway since I upgraded to the NPR alternator and the factory one wouldn't work.

So I built a heavy duty bench that the A/C pump can rest on.

This will be very tight, especially since the turbo inlet is right there. The A/C pump will be fixed and originally I was going to run it off the alternator/water pump and use the alternator as the tensioner but my friend David made a good point of reminding me how cheap the bearings are water pumps. So the A/C pump will be fixed and going off the crank/power steering setup instead.

Tomorrow I'll be mounting and modifying the pump and other than modifying the turbo housing, I think that is it for fab work on this engine.

Don't mess it up, that engine is purdy. ;) (helpful I know, but you know what they say, if you don't like the answer....)
 
Hopefully over the holidays, I know he'd be keen for sure, give him the important jobs like polishing that oil pan to a mirror finish! :D
 
I have used a spray on ceramic coat that worked great in the past. I found them selling there stuff on eBay and got a can of it as well as a sprayer. Sprayed my manifold and turbine housing. If it works as good as in the past it should last a long time.

i would let you borrow my sprayer and some of my coating but I'm away till the 5th. VHT has worked well for me in the past.

So I spent all morning running around to New Line, Kinetic Motorsports (they are called something else now), ADP, Mopac, etc.
Once again, with the exception of New Line (and ADP since they were closed) I'm reminded why I buy online. Mopac and Kinetic both had average service and highly marked up prices for the same stuff that is available online for around 25% of what they charge (same quality). Not impressed, but since I didn't have the choice of waiting I had to spend the money. I can't understand how a business can charge $40 for a small aluminum flange with a fitting that is available online from many places for under $10. Argh. Rant over, back to work ;)
 
For all the BS you had to go through to get this far it's looking fawkin sweet!
 
Thanks, yea, this was probably the most annoying build ever.
Just doing finish welding and clean up on the alternator/AC bracket ....which has turned into an entertaining abortion.

Now the only ...currently the only problem I can see that I have are the fittings for the AC pump. They are a special automotive fitting and getting adapters for it is next to impossible even through new line.
So I have 2 options:
1. New line can likely take the existing AC hoses, which I have, and modify them if the hose is compatible.
2. Make new fitting blocks, likely out of aluminum, that replace the current caps with something that has an NPT thread. This will be more time consuming and I don't have my mill in the shop yet so it is do-able but painful.
3. Any suggestions?

Got the bracket finished, no pics since the phone died, but it should do the trick. If I can get the hoses cut and redone with new fittings then I'm good, if I can't it will be more interesting.
Everything else is looking pretty good, just have to finish off the thermostat housing and figure how many plugs to get for all the crap it used to have (turbo water coolant) that isn't needed anymore.

It will be a few months before you will need the AC pump plumbed, get that turbo buttoned up and get that motor stuffed in already.
AC, really? Did you misplace the window cranks?
