Guys wheeling hard with 35s and over kill the front 80 series differentials..

Radius arm suspension is a good setup, but very limited.

I know several broken ones in 80s with 35s. But knowing the individuals involved, it isn't too surprising.

IIRC the front diff on an 80 isn't much different then a mini SFA, the birfs are for sure bigger though. At the end of the day a front diff from an 80's is still an 8" diff..

How many miles did they have on the differential? 200k awd miles like most 80s have?

No, sadly, the last one was a new professional set up with 5.29s. The driver is known not to be the most careful, but still...

5.29s give an awfully small pinion gear. Especially for a big fj80. Also, what brand r&p are they using for 5.29s? How bout with the stock 4.10 gears? Are people breaking those? When I asked about the front diff strength of an 80 in the 80 section, no one mentioned breakage. I had considered going that route. But didnt since I had a ARB for a 9.5 diff.

I can understand if you've got most of the used parts ready to go, and that can save some money, but in the case that you'd be buying everything new, (third member, steering, knuckles, brakes, hubs, etc) is there much of a cost savings there, vs the strength upgrade of a 609 style front axle?

2nd the extra 1.5" width. I ran a 60 axle, and welded in an LC wizard extension on the passenger side, which doesnt require outboarding and still clear the diff. Only wish I had the bling for a diamond axle, but assume you choose the length when you order. Either way, let's you run an 80 rear or myriad of other options.

The 3" can make a difference. On my mini truck it had that stock rear axle, with 31's I was almost rubbing the spring. FJ80 axles under my FJ40

Anybody have any pics of front of FJ with 80 width axles?
This has 61" wide axle up front with 2" offset wheels which would equal fj80 width using 3" offset wheels, it his 35" tires. Maybe gives u a idea.
