the ground wires here that mount to the turn signal/brake light housing light up with the meter... does that mean it is jsut not getting a ground? ( should i pull em off and scruff the paint?

The green wire in the upper right shows hot too, kinda weird :(

Darn Grounds

You fine picture above shows a common problem of paint getting in the way of the ground. When I got my 40 back from painting and assembly I had lots of gremlins due to this. The first I noticed was the turn signals working and then not working. Darn paint.

The dash turn signal indicator with one wire running to it requires the body of the indicator to ground through the dash. Taking a dremel with some sort of abrasive brush clean the paint off the back of the dash and off the inside of the hole. The instrument panel also grounds through it's metallic body to the dash. This will allow the nut which holds the indicator to contact the body as well as allow the lamp to ground through it's body to the metal dash.

The same thing with all lights, unless they are set up with dedicated grounds, will be grounding through the metal body of the lamp and to ultimately the body and then the frame. Connecting bolts, hole and surface around the hole needs to be free of paint.

For the connection from the battery to the frame ensure all is clean and tight. Then ensure there is a separate grounding strap from the frame to the engine or to the bolts where the mounts bolt to the frame. I have also seen a strap from the frame to one of the starter mounting bolts.

I know this isn't the fun part of reassembly but a good job now will eliminate little gremlins later. Also, you may always spray paint, clear or colored, over your connection points after all is tight to prevent any rust showing up.

One more thing, somewhere on ih8mud, someone mentioned upping the wattage of the turn signal lights. I got some bulbs just a few watts higher (something like 2w to 5 or 7 or 10?) and it made a huge difference. Same goes for the 4wd indicator lamp.

oops looks like i did not win that canvas tool bag, oh well :(

Man I hate wiring....

Maybe i should get it running, bleed the brakes and bring it into a electrical place like this:

Auto Battery & Electric

You think they be able to sort it out, or do i need a landcruiser specific place/
Ugh i hate this

I honestly do not know enough about electrical to get this right :(

Well sir, what isn't working? Let's solve one at a time.

oy

1) turn signals do not blink ( truck is not running, just on position for all of this )
2) rear turn signals do not work when the headlights are on.
3) left dash turn signal indicator does not work at all

Car will turn over ( have not put gas in the beast yet as I do not have the one rubber hose from the heater to the passenger side thermostat housing, it is a weird size and bigger than the old rubber tube, maybe need some adapter? dunno.

ugh

There is no way you are going to get away with doing everything you have so for by yourself, and then letting someone else fix the simple stuff!!

We can sort out your electrical problems. The wiring on a 64 is simple and I have a working one in the garage that we can double check against. Call me when you are ready to chase things down....it will be quick and painless. As mentioned in earlier...clean all of your grounds and remember that the taillights are body grounded....meaning the electricity needs bare metal from the bulb housing, thru the bolts to the taillight bracket, through the bracket bolts to the frame. The lack of flashing sounds like a bad flasher...we can easily test that as well.

Destin,

is it just me or can I see primer in that picture you posted above?

.9) Make yourself a portable ground (PG). That is a wire attached to the negative terminal of the battery, something 10+ feet long so you can reach everywhere on the truck.

1) I had this problem too. The flasher unit grounds through it's body. So the clamp around it will need the inside cleaned as will the firewall side of the clamp assembly. I assume there is no clicking sound? Take lead to flasher and your portable ground. Probe on one of the two lead sockets and one on the PG. You should see some voltage when the lever is moved to the blinking position.

Now that you see voltage, plug lead into flasher unit. Then turn indicator to left or right position and ground the case of the flasher. Clicking? Shock yourself?

No click at this point could be a sticky contactor in the flasher.

Let me know how this works.

thanks bro

I have to feed my dog first.

Cool if I call you in a half an hour?

Thanks again man!

Destin

Does it take you a half hour to feed that thing?

dope!

Thanks everyone for your help

And thanks killerpea for talking me through it.
So all is working ( blinkers were working ( flashing ) but the battery as down to 10v from me leaving it on to test heeh )

But now i have brake lights ( fuse was 10v instead of 5 volt for some reason )
indicators and running rear lights.

I will need to clean up the rear harness tomorrow ( tore off alll the crappy old tape and figured out what went to what, what a mess :D

so I think all is good now, still need to figure out which wire to splice into for the license plate light :D

alright :D

T0morrow is the day :D

All i need to do is add water to the radiator and gas in the tank and I will fire her up :D

I will take a video when it is fired up :D

Then am gonna bleed the brakes and do little s*** like tighten bolts until the seats are done :D

STOKED!!!!!!

:D

Destin,

Want to bring me a front seat?

Backs and can you post a pic of the screws that are used on the back covers?

I will need both at some point, so sure.....I just want to get the drivers seat together so you can park your ass and make vroooooooooooooom vroooooooooooooooom sounds.
