Delta VS rear bumper sneak peek

Why doesn't Delta just build a hitch receiver ino the bumper like 4x4 Labs? They already want an arm and a leg for the bumper, now you have to buy more stuff to add to it? This doesn look very clean either. 4x4 Labs FTW.

In case anyone was wondering, you can most definitely install a Slee hitch into a Delta bumper. The process to do so is pretty simple following the Slee instructions since Dave designed the Delta bumper with the intent on allowing folks to do just this. I just used a sharpie to mark out a box around the 4 factory bolt holes in the rear cross member and then used a zip wheel and saw-zall to cut a rectangle out of the bumper shell and rear cross member. Apply some primer and black paint to the cut edges and then bolt it all together. The result is nice and clean bumper, now with a super bomber hitch.

Nice looking install!

Makes me think I did a half-way job with my surface mount. I was only thinking of recovery use though, not towing.

Thanks for posting Photos. We both have the same color LX450. My Delta VS front and rear bumpers just arrived. It looks like the Slee hitch bracket and LRA Fuel tank is a no go but great mod nonetheless.
So you are SOL on having a receiver now? That would be a solid no go for me.

Pretty sure the answer is 'lawyers". I asked the same question when I bought my rear.

If I need a receiver, I believe I can use my current receiver underneath the Delta VS rear bumper. The factory hitch doesn't traigulate like the Slee bracket does, but attaches to underneath the frame rails. I haven't installed the bumper to check fitment though.

I have towed a large camper with my LX450, but I don't plan to in the future.

That would take away one of the purposes of a new bumper, increased approach angle. And it would look like your balls are hanging out of your shorts.

Yeah the triangulated Slee hitch wont play well with the LRA AUX tank. I plan to replace the main tank with an LRA 37 gallon unit. Never have been a fan of all that fuel weight being behind the rear axle for handling purposes, espesially with all the rear bumper weight most of us have added.

Thanks I am really happy with how it came out.
Regarding your pintle hitch, you should be fine for light towing (think small utility trailer), but I wouldn't recommend using it for recovery. The shock loads that recovery will put on those threads could turn that whole pintle into a missile firing at the vehicle behind you that is either recovering you or you are recovering. The Delta bumper has two very stout recovery points built in already, I would use those with a rated shackle for all recoveries.

This setup works great, I had my homemade jobbie already in place when I got the Delta but basically the same design, probably cost me $10 to pull off. Been working great for years, I just need to finish it to fit the bumper and used their plate to cover the gaps for now... Was really nervous cutting into the bumper but had to move forward or cut it all out. @Dirty Koala, what are you going to do to mount the wiring hookup placement? this is where I stalled out a bit as I don't want it hanging down and ultimately was hoping Delta would make a nice little hatch to maybe cut into the face.

Delta and 4x4 Labs are playing in different leagues as far as design, engineering and strength goes. It's a T-ball vs MLB scenario. Liability is the reason for the hitch not being incorporated into the bumper, and as a business decision that makes complete sense to me. Having the bumper designed in a way that allows the use of the best available hitch on the market (Slee's hitch) was a very smart move on Delta's part. Gives those that want the hitch the abilty to add it, and those that don't want it, don't need to buy it, all without adding liability risk to the company...same model that Slee uses on their own bumpers.

Regarding not looking clean...sorry, I'll go wash the red dirt off and add some instagram filters for you.

You sound a bit bitter on Delta for some reason. Any bumper that you want to have an integrated and traingulated hitch installed for real strength is going to take up the same space that an AUX long range tank will take up. That's a priorities decision that each person can make for themselves. I personally would rather an LRA main tank replacement to keep the weight centered between the axles. Once you drop down out of the Delta/Slee caliber of bumpers, the intergrated hitch offerings are basically a piece of 2" square tube welded into the shell of the bumper....not the most stout design, but good luck with your Labs, they work fine for lots of folks.

Nice. I suggested exactly this when they were still in the sneak peek stage like 2 years ago. Glad to see my armchair engineering is on point. Lol

I agree, but there is more to the hitch on the Labs bumper. Way more than just welded to the shell.

Nicely done, I appreciate your input back then...worked out great for me :)

Yes you are right, the labs does have more that just the shell. They also tie it into the replacement cross member after you cut out the factory cross memeber.

I haven't given much thought to the trailer wiring plug mount yet. I currently just have the 4 pin wire tucked up out of the way. If I start pulling a trailer with any frequency, then I will likely figure out an easier to reach placement.

Good deal, I'm a bit in the same boat , for now, but will complete it at some point. I was just pushing for my bike mount to get by also. Mine has a bit more weight to it tho lol.
Nice Yeti BTW, I have a SB150 I logged over 2K miles on last year. Next is a mount for that thing but thinking on the side of the 80 over the rear slider window... Too much going on with the rear Delta and not even done hanging s*** off it yet.

You certainly are hanging a lot of weight off the back there. What did you do to mount your bike up there? I love my Yeti...its an SB5.5, I am heading down to Moab this weekend to hit Porcupine Rim, hence the push to figure out the hitch situation.
