Defining the Optimal Speaker Setup

Go with name brand, except don't get sony subs they suck. RF, JL etc. all good stuff. I wouldn't suggest getting bigger than a 12, they sound sloppy once you get bigger, if you need more bass get 2 x 10. I've got a 250 (actually 296) RMS Amp (Max value means nothing, RMS counts) pushin a JL 12W3v2. It his harder than I'd ever listen to, and I listen to a lot of hip-hop.
andrew - which amp did you get? sounds like a really nice system. any other suggestions? My ideal setup (dreaming of course) is some 5.5 - 6.5's in doors with tweets on dash. and 10's behind back seat in panels. two tens should give plenty of lows...

I have Rockford Fosgate P2502 Amp and a JL Audio 12w3v2. Unless you need A LOT of bass, I'd say one 12 should suffice, its loud.

Now, in terms of stereo car systems, I am a complete noob. I know you need an amp to drive a woofer, but do you need amps to drive the speakers?

The headunit usually has a pre-amp, basically a small amp that produces 50watts over 4 channels usually. So your front speakers are getting 12.5 watts each. Typically separate subwoofers require about 100watts, so you need a separate amplifier to use them. Really nice speakers benefit from more power as well, a high end component set can require 75 watts a speaker x 4 = 300 watt 4 channel amp.
Google around you can find out anything you want, there is a large volume of information about this stuff on the intarweb.

I see. So, lets say that one has the best speakers that one can find. Then for the best sound, one would require two amps, one for the speakers, and one for the sub?
In addition to that, the amp is basically a network repeater that just amplifies the signal that comes from the head unit and sends it to the speakers, right?
It's all coming together...

Well, you could have single channel amps or two channel amps bridged (into one channel) on each speaker, and if you had 14 speakers you could have 14 amps. Or you could have a big powerful five channel amp and have 4 speakers and a subwoofer on each channel... there are many different ways to set it up!
A typical nice car setup has a 4 channel amp pushing 4 speakers and a 2 channel bridged (assuming one sub) or a mono pushing a sub.
You can set it up any way you like. Wait till you get to things like resistance etc, then it starts to get more and more complex!
I have a set of Audiobahn speakers that were shallow enough to mount without cutting anything. I can't remember what model they are, but from a quick look at their site, it seems like they still have some that would work.
for durability, i've had a clarion arx in 4 different 4 x 4's, i'm kinda gettin pissed that it WON"T F$^$en break, none of the other stereos I've had have even come close to this, were talking like 10 flippin years with the same deck, its a cassette player too, oh and get the sattelite deal, its kicks a$$$, was able to take out the 12 pack cd and no need to buy cd's now, lovin it
Whatever you end up with, if you run any kind of powerful amp make sure to size your power cables correctly. Good amps will draw heavily from the battery(s), and big cable needs to be used for a conduit. Easy thing to overlook.

4 Ga. You can't really go too big, and going small will always hurt. Your amp will make cleaner sound if it is sufficently powered. Also, if you ever feel the need to upgrade you are keeping your options open. Buy quality wire and connectors too, make your life easier.
