Johnny didn't see these in the other posts but I keep seeing them pop up on different threads on 4bt swaps.

Check valve clearances

Check fuel shutoff solenoid

Checked and checked. Valves were set by yours truly when I reinstalled the head and the fuel shutoff solenoid has been checked and re-checked. It'll be checked a third time while the IP is at the shop.

I had a similar experience when I first installed my Mercedes diesel, after a week of screwing with it I finally pull started it. I just could not get fuel through all of the new lines and IP after having it all apart for 6 months.

I don't know if it will work for you but it shouldn't hurt anything to try it.

Thanks a ton brother. A whirlwind is right!

I was just looking at the backing plates yesterday. They're perfect! Did you leave the 80 e-brake cable somewhere, or that 80 driveshaft? I didn't see either, but then again, it's hard to find a pair of vicegrips in Ramon's poor garage :D

hey man, sorry I missed this one.
I did leave the ebrake cable/handle/assy there. Let me know if you need a shot of an 80 axle to figure out any stops or mounting tab locations.

I brought the driveshaft back as I thought it was determined to be unuseable. I can bring it back by wed night or thursday if you need it. i have the whole front or splined half of a rear. shoot me a text.

no need to respond, just thinking out loud and im sure its been covered in 60s tech or 4bt swaps. What is involved in timing the injection? is it adjustable by positioning of the IP like a dizzy? just wondering yesterday if there was injection timing to consider but im 4btdumb :D

Cool man, thank you. I found it the other day when I realized that I had not one, but two e-brake cables

Timing IP timing can be done two ways, first with how the IP gear lines up with the cam gear, and then how the IP is rotated in relation to the timing gear housing. In this pic, you can see the IP gear ( top right ) and how it lines up with the cam gear. The IP gear's 'F' lines up with the cam gear's '0':

The exact timing is adjusted after the cam gear is lined up correctly with a dial indicator through the rear of the IP IIRC. However, my IP has a woodruff key on the input shaft, which means that the IP shaft can only line up one way with the IP gear, meaning that if the IP and motor are both pinned at TDC, then it is literally impossible to mess up the timing.

This is an engineer's motor and I love it :D

Had some great news from Chason Diesel today. Turns out that when I put the top cover back on after replacing the governor spring that the governor spring had became unhooked from the throttle shaft. This meant that there was zero tension on the throttle arm in the main body of the IP, causing it to be in the shutdown position all the time. This produced the low line pressure we observed while bleeding the injectors and is the cause of my motor not cranking up on the 9th when we first cranked it. While frustrating, I'm glad the problem has been determined and corrected.

While at Chason Diesel, Kevin calibrated my pump to set idle and max idle speeds, then set the full power screw at 50-55CCs of flow, which he said was 10% over stock. He also tested the pump with the fuel screw turned all the way into the stock limiting collar and found that it would flow ~110CCs, so I've still got tons of room to move up without any issue.

I intend to have this installed tomorrow afternoon and have a running 4BTJ60 by tomorrow evening! Keep your fingers crossed.

I plan to be there to witness it :D

Glad it was diagnosed, now we prove it!!

Awesome news. Always the simple stuff that gets ya.
I may have to come by on thursday and witness this thing. May be ready for a beer by then :)

thats good news.

Thanks for helping troubleshoot guys, I wouldn't have been able to do it without your help!

Jay, tomorrow the IP is going back in and assuming that the driveshaft is finished tomorrow, she will move under her own power. If that works out, then Wednesday and Thursday will be cleanup and moving the rest of the bits back over to my house, so Ramon can have his garage back :D

Just got back from the State game and my driveway wreaks of diesel... Exhaust. Good sign!
