You guys seem to have had a lot of fun! I woke up at 6:30 to join you guys but my air down gear and viair 88p compressor hadn’t arrived. Maybe I shouldn’t bring my gx until I get née tires and lift?

I’ll most definitely join you guys next time if I’m in town! Glad everyone made it out safe

All you really need is a key or twig and a tire gauge to air down and a cheap compressor to air back up. The fancy stuff certainly makes things easier but you don’t need it. On a trail like this you’ll be fine on stock tires without a lift and we (collectively) have plenty of recovery gear. If nothing else you can ride along and still have fun. Don’t let not having things hold you back from coming!! Hope to see you on the next trip!

You must have forgotten to tell that to Nick before heading out. :flipoff2:

And a scorecard for the bets on when the core needle will bend. Might not be today but it most certainly will be when it's raining or snowing or cold or muddy, etc. Just get one of these at Walmart. Best $2.50 you can spend on tire stuff -a tool that you can use for many purposes plus 4 valve cores just in case. There's another Slime kit that comes in a little plastic case with that stuff and even more for about $8. More than a few guys just air down by carefully unscrewing the core with that tool and keeping a steady hand on it while keeping a count they've figured out to judge PSI (the same method is used by the $40 air-down tool/gauge but the design screws on to the stem to capture the core, eliminating the risk of it flying away and obviously the count isn't needed). Or, you can simply use the fitted end to depress the core instead of a key or stick, and it's much more comfortable and safe.

Side note from experience - the guys who are taking the longest to air down, usually with the 'press the core' method, often don't go down far enough because they're holding up the group; at some point on the trail it will be come evident that they need to stop and do it again. New guys are the most commonly affected by this. No offense intended to anyone.

I got the item below for $36 and the viair 88p, the latter based on recommendations from ih8mud's other member responses (older threads). It takes a while to air down esp larger tires and can kill your knees, not worth a few bucks. If you all recommend a diff unit(s), please let me know.

@light1 I have no personal experience with auto deflators; I've read and heard many people complain about all but a couple brands over the years. Problems like "wandering zero". I don't know which brands are best. I'd like to get some one day.

I'm sure the 88P will be fine. I looked at it but bought the 300P in January because it was an upgrade from my old Superflow MV-50 (the 88P equivalent) and I apparently have a lot of friends who always seem to have to misplaced their compressors, so speed and duty cycle upgrades were worth it to me. Actually, I just looked - paid $151 on Amazon and it's now $204! Ackk! Just make sure to run the engine while it pumps to get more speed from it and not drain the battery, and don't read the gauge while it's pumping...turn it off to read it. Those built in gauges should be checked against a known accurate gauge every now and then, too.

I learned a trick when I had the MV-50 that I think helped mine last 6 years of heavy usage. I always hung it from a slider instead of keeping it on the ground so that it wouldn't be breathing in as much dust. Meh, maybe so maybe not, but it makes me feel better.

I have the ARB EZ tire deflator and it's really quick. You still have to tend it as the pressure is going down so not great for the knees but I can air down to 15 psi about 90 seconds per tire.

Don't forget to look at the best option, Staun deflators that come set at 18 psi. Resetting to desired pressure is simple. With the Power Tank inflator, you can view the air pressure during inflation. You might want to take a look at the Puma 12V inflator. See page 8 for my pics. On the Taco (not a wheeler), I have it separated from the tank and carry it in a bag.

Not at all! Just come on out. An easy trail ride like this is a perfect starting point.

I carry that pack with me just in case. Already had 2 valve cores leak on me.

For a starting point if you haven't been wheeling before that compressor is perfect. I have the 70p and it works...it just takes forever. Its a perfect time to just chill out and chat before you head home though. When/if you upgrade, you can pass it down as an emergency inflator to your other car.

Like John said, those "automatic" deflators are nice but the only thing is you still kind of need to pay attention to them. Over time the springs in them change and although they got your tires to 18psi when you first used them, the next time it might be higher or lower. If they go bad completely they can totally deflate your tire to 0 psi. They're a lot easier than holding a valve stem though.

Please come out to a trail ride and we'll show you the ropes if you've never been wheeling.

Thanks guys for all the feedback! I don't like to keep buying, I may just upgrade the compressor now since I haven't opened the one that arrived. Go directly to 300p/400p. Saves me time!

I could not find the puma on amazon.

I went big with the 400p. It’s nice being able to air up faster than the majority of people. Inevitably, someone will show up without a compressor and lending them the bigger 400p is nice and quick.

Speed isn’t a big deal if you’re only wheeling every once in a while, but if you’re on a week long trip airing up every day you’ll really appreciate a quick fill.

I’m about to send my 24v P400 back to Viair because it sucks ass and won’t get above 20 psi.
Edit**sorry if that sounds rude. I read a bunch on them and they have a good reputation, just salty that mine needs repaired after two uses. Murphy’s law or something 🤪

Maybe they’ll send you a new one, mine has been going strong for 5 years with tons of use.

If you google on puma 12v compressor, you'll find them. When I bought one for the Taco, they were about $220.

The cheapest I could find now is $300 at: Puma PD1006 12 Volt 1.5 Gallon Oil-Less Air Compressor - https://compressor-source.com/products/puma-pd1006-12-volt-1-5-gallon-oil-less-air-compressor?variant=12487135658050

For that price, you might want to look at Extremeaire from Outback at $450. I have one in my '40, but it was a lot cheaper then.

Thanks, I will look into these. I did find the Puma, not sure if at this point I just got with the 300p ViAir, the rest are at least 50%-200% more.

You'll be happy with the Viair 300p. That's what I still have. Takes me about 3mins to go from 16ish psi to 40psi on 35s.

Thanks, I will go with it. I think my 33 K02's are at 33PSI (normal).

Lol. Chatted with them today and they’re not as charitable as we had hoped, so I’m sending it to them

nope, gotta pay. times must be tough for viair too, lol

So I decided to come to flagpole today… follow the same path. First time wheelin… this is awesome, the 80 is handing it like a champ, I even went up that hill. Not a soul to be seen so far and I’m almost at flagpole…

Really nice day! Happy holidays to you guys!
