Buy the emissions manual and start checking ALL you vac lines. Not fun, but important.

Search out either Mark (65swb45), in CA or Jim C in Ohio. They both build carbs very well I am told. Yuo could call them and perhaps trouble shoot a little more precisely...

Check the color of the spark plugs. If the carb is fubared and running really rich then the plugs should be black. If the plugs are tan, then I'll bet your problem is in the air injection system. A shop with a tailpipe exhaust gas analyzer will get you to the cause of the problem rapidly. If they can shoot compressed air into the exhaust stream and make the HC and CO drop, then the aiir pump or switching valves aren't working. Depending on how much the numbers drop, it could be the cat. They can also easily adjust the idle mixture while monitoring the output. It beats taking guesses if you are unfamiliar with the emissions systems and don't have the book.
