Damn hot engine temps from supercharger install

I am having the same problem with a newly installed SC. I just came back from Tennessee and i was running hot. Did you solve your overheating problems. What did you do to get it right. Thanks.

What fan is on it? The 3.slo ring fan the comes in the kit is a POS, if that is what is on it, swapping in a 3FE fan, like AISIN FNT-022 often solves the problem.

Yeap, i have rhe fan and the clutch that comes with the kit. I will put back my blue fan clutch and run it again. Also going to check the cats temperature and see if that is in line with what you have been experiencing here. I will post back.

I ran into this before and it would run so hot it would shut down the ac in temps over 105.
Tried everything you could imagine to relieve the running hot.
The 80 was built with a Kazuma, ARB winch bumper, winch, dual battery, underhood compressor....
Rebuilt the ac fan clutch with 10k cst oil. Helped moderately
Louvered the hood. no change
Installed lower temp thermostat. no change
Changed radiator to a 3 row custom aluminum radiator... no change (talk about a let down)
Head gasket. no change
Basically the engine bay was full and not enough airflow passing through it.
Finally put 2 very powerful pusher fans (don't remember the brand) in front of the radiator which helped more than anything but it still ran warmer than I liked in the summer.

Good luck, I hope I saved you some time
Man reading what you have done to yours with little to no gain gives me some piece of mind. I have a 95 with 245k that just warms right up to 195 any day of the week, no matter what. Fresh head gasket replacement from TorFab preventatively, new OEM radiator, all coolant hoses, EGR delete, full cooling system flush w/Toyota red. I am heavily considering "downgrading" the radiator to a TYC since guys in AZ seem to have such good luck with them? The only thing I have not addressed is replacing the exhaust system as I have just started throwing a p0401 code. Maybe time for new cats?? A friend of mine's 80 (with the TYC radiator) runs at 184-186 in 4lo on CO trails without any of the cooling refresh work mine has had - beyond frustrating.

I blew a radiator and fan at the Rubicon....put in a Napa unit and ran a 14" elec. spal fan for the next 2 days and see my engine temp @ 230F and tranny temp @ 220F....pulled over a few times to let the engine cool just to get off the trail. slap in a bigger puller fan from Napa and ran Fordyce right after...a little cooler, but 225F plus. Convert to dual electric fans right after and been running 185F on stop and go traffic with AC and no more than 205F pulling steep grade for the past 2 yrs. AC is 200% better. Sorry this is with my 3FE. and i wouldn't attempt this on 1FZ tho...

Just thought I would add to this heat / supercharger thread. The absolute best solution to heat in my truck has been venting my hood. I used a jeep plate and modified it, cut out the areas around the hood ribs and slapped it on. Huge decrease. That and methanol injection have solved any heat issues I had.

Do you have any pictures?

sorry not on hand, I think it was a TJ hood plate, easy to do

I have a turbo 80 so my engine temps + underhood temp were skyrocketing. A Ron Davis radiator took care of the coolant temps but the underhood temp is still high. It's so hot that I'm unable to touch the tops of either fenders after I come home from work. I do have louvers stamped into the hood, and the fender skirts pulled off but it's stupid hot. I'll see if i can lower under hood temps in 2026.

I've been supercharged since October 2022. With a Denso rad, OG fan, blue hub, Toyota red coolant, and original SC pulley, I run 179 to 186 in the winter and 184 to 190 in the summer. On some of our hottest days, my temp did peak at 195.

I will add that my engine was rebuilt in fall of 2021 so everything internally was fresh for the supercharger. I replaced my headgasket (again) in summer of 2024 and lost all coolant in my radiator in Nov 2024.

heat wrap everything properly

heat wrap the turbo, downpipe, and exhaust manifold, you'll need the proper fitted turbo blanket, 2"heat wrap for the downpipe and 1" for the manifold, it will reduce the temps under the hood to normal levels, it really does work very well.
I always do it..... and ignore the people who say it will rot out your manifold or downpipe, its bullshiit
