hey, thanks for chiming in on the pump.

i noticed that the linkage was binding up while driving the truck back from storage. popped the hood to inspect the linkage by disconnecting each part and working things. cable and bell crank were free. the governor shaft lever had a tight spot in it. hit it with some spray lube and worked it for a while. it didn't improve. was moving the shaft and felt something sort of give, then it freed up. started the engine up and idled for a couple minutes. after a bit, fuel started seeping out from under the arm.

ordered a replacement shaft o-ring, washer, and housing cover gasket and dug in. found a groove worn in to the inside of the cover where the shaft washer rides. found measurable wear on the shaft of the arm. one end of the arm has wear on the thrust side, call that the top where the threads are, then on the opposite side at the bottom of the shaft. sort of like this: / the top right being the wear area, and the bottom left being the other one. i believe that the arm was cocked in the bore at an angle and that was causing the binding. i assume that since the shaft is steel and that the housing is aluminum, they would both have wear in them.

hopefully that makes sense.

as far as the corrosion, i was wondering about that. i went back thru the photos that i took while doing the job, and from what i can see it is fairly clear of rust down further. not 100% certain tho, as i didn't take any shots directly down into the governor housing. could be an issue, i'll be sure to take a closer look next time i am in there to replace the shaft and the cover.

Wear looks normal to me. The O-ring takes up clearance and seals the bore. If there is an obvious groove in the housing or unevenness on the shaft, then indeed they may need replacing.

I'd be more concerned with the signs of corrosion on the governor flyweight holder and the HAC actuator link. Maybe these parts were exposed for a long time, but if there is corrosion throught the pump from contaminated diesel, it may wear quickly. It might be worth checking, unless you can see it was fine deeper down.

I am so not following Chris's process - I got new spare and 4 old on right now. Only rotating old for when I do get 4 new and then start with rotate 5. "Even wear" I tell myself - along with other lies I guess - ie "These jeans still fit."
