Forgot you are looking for a starter, too. I think the 5.9 should have the same one. Does this one work for you?

The one you have is a three hole starter and the ones for CPL 858, I think, are two hole. I do remember someone on 4BTswaps saying that they had made a 3 hole starter work with a two hole application. Let me search...

I think it was this post. You need to check the FAQ sticky.
Starter

Thanks Dave. I used the numbers you and Cullman provided and did some searches. It's not the low $150 I was hoping to find for a starter, but I can get the Bosch starter that is listed for just over $235 from Summit. Not a bad price considering that NAPA can get the same starter for me for $350.

I'm inclined to go for a new starter and a big name because it gets so cold here in the winter. Sure, I'm putting in three different heating systems to insure starting, but I would like to know the starter is solid too.

If you guys haven't checked out Legacy Classic Trucks: Classic and Vintage Trucks | Legacy Classic Trucks , do so. He builds some of the nicest looking trucks you will come accross (Not Toyotas). This guy is here in town and has always been very nice. One of his employees has an FJ60 with a Cummins 4bt in it. I went over to see the FJ60 last night, but it wasn't there. But, the owner of Legacy Trucks, who gets as excited about a build as anyone (His or yours), started digging out parts. He had the hard to find alternator bracket for a 4bt, forklift isolators (Engine mounts that are super squishy), the Dakota Digital tach sender, 4000 RPM springs, a fan hub (I decided to go with a different one), electrical switches, and a whole bunch of cool ideas I couldn't afford. Score! I'm just waiting on the prices.

Cool you found some parts.

Sidenote: Are you sure they do not do Toyota's ?

"Legacy Classic Trucks did an amazing job modernizing my 1996 Land Cruiser and made it like new, just like I envisioned—from the V-8 conversion to heated leather seats. I would highly recommend LCT to anyone looking for a custom shop to restore their truck."

-Heath Thomson

Seems like cool people good find.

Seems like cool people good find.

I just didn't want to have you guys think you were going over to see a bunch of nice FJ60s. He will, in fact, build anything you want. He is actually a BIG FJ60 guy for his own vehicle. He used to have FJ60 with a ramjet, corporate 14s, 38s, etc, etc... He really inspired me to go further.

Starter mounting patterns

I did some digging into the various mounting dimensions for starters and this is what I've found:

Starter mounting flanges are covered under SAE J542. There are 5 mounts.

SAE #1 - Medium duty. 3 bolt holes, 0.42-0.43" diameter, 0°, 90°, and 180° apart, on a 5" diameter bolt circle. register (pilot) diameter is 3.495-3.499". This is what dodge uses, and what is most common on the B series.

SAE #2 - Heavy Duty. not common. Same as SAE #3 below, but with 0.42-0.43" diameter bolt holes.

SAE #3 - Heavy Duty. 3 bolt holes, 0.6542-0.6642" diameter, all 120° apart, on a 5.75" diameter bolt circle. Register diameter is 3.620-3.624". This is common on the larger diesels, like the C series and up.

SAE #4 - Light Duty. 2 bolt holes, 0.4667-0.4767" diameter, 180° apart, on a 4.125" diameter bolt circle. Register diameter is 3.245-3.249". This sounds like what you have.

SAE #5 - Light Duty. 2 bolt holes, 0.4667-0.4767" diameter, 180° apart, on a 5.5" diameter bolt circle. Register diameter is 3.245-3.249".

Of course, this is not to be confused with SAE #1,2,3,4 etc flywheel housings. A #2 flywheel housing can have a #1 or #3 starter mount, depending on application. I don't think the adapter you have is covered under the SAE spec, but I imagine the starter mounting pattern is, and is either a #4 or #5.

Now don't get me started on ring gear designations... That is as confusing as it comes.

K, You are a crazy !@#$%^&!. How do you have the time and patients to find that stuff? Thanks for the info.

I am a geeky engineer. I dig this stuff. I figured that info might be good to save for posterity since it was tough to find, so I posted it in your thread. Hopefully it arms you a bit better when going to the parts guys. I do have access to a lot of the spec's and standards through work. Not all (no IBC's), but most of the SAE, ASME, ANSI, and similar. I will gladly look up stuff during my breaks for people if they want!

Is there any merit to using the adapter off of a 94-98.5 dodge? I believe those trucks came with a NV4500, and used the three bolt #1 starter. Might be worth considering if the starter you require is not a common stock item.

I have a Chevy bellhousing hooked to a Ranger and then an H55. I want to keep them. Your info is getting me close though. Thanks.
