Cruiser Down

Sounds good. I got some 63" chevy springs for the rear to help get the oingo boingo pogo sticking to slow down. I'm thinking about relocating the shocks to a more vertical position to help control the axle, since I have flull flex and the shocks only move about 4" of travel. That tells me they either need to be REALLY stiff, or I need to fix them so they utilize more travel per inch of wheel travel. Still working on ideas for the front. I really like the ride I have now, but think a little more travel would be nice. Maybe a little longer shackle?

Well another update is due.

I have had a growl that has gotten worse, so I started "Operation Suicide." I put the cruiser up on jackstands, hooked up the tow strap to the truck and had Darcie get in the driver's seat. I could get the 80 to make the growl at around 30-35mph, so I had Darcie hold it there. This is where the suicide part comes in. I crawled under the 80 while Darcie was holding it steady around 35mph. Grabbed the mechanic stethyscope(sp) and crawled under the 80 and started listening. The rear pinion/third member is where the sound is coming from, so I have to pull the third. I guess my gear install didn't work out:bang:, so I have to get it down to Sean one day this week and get it put back together before the weekend. At least the rear is fairly easy to remove/install, much better than the front.

Well, sounds like good news although it's still bad. Would it be better if you let Sean listen to this so that he can see for himself what's going on?

If you're pressed for time before the weekend run, drop the front DS from/to the trail head. Unless you think the problem may rear its ugly head while you're wheeling.

Just some ideas.

Sorry, it is the rear axle.

Now that takes some stones to crawl around under the truck with the drive shaft and tires a spin'n at 35mph! I don't care how short your hair is! Hats off to ya Jack!

Sorry to hear about the gear issue though.

Thanks, I made sure the tow strap was hooked up to the Ford and Darcie had her foot on the brake, so if something went wrong, hopefully the 80 wouldn't go far. I tested it out before I crawled under there and it was really stable. I did have to lock in the CDL though, the ABS didn't like the tires not having any resistance, so I tried it again without ABS and it would stop immediately, so there was some margin of safety.:D

I learned my lesson, just take it to someone for your gear changes.

I appreciate the offer, but the rear axle is a full floater, so the tear down goes relatively quickly. The only downside is the rear third is f'n heavy, so its fun to wrestle in and out. I will get it out this morning.

I wondered the same thing...ewww.

Ewww, x2.

Sounds like Tojo's Revenge has hit you as well.

Good luck.

Sounds like we are having similar luck. Went out to the ramcharger the other day and it had a mysterious flat tire with no visible nails or holes..... It's one of those mystery flats that only happens when the planets and the tire are aligned perfectly, the rest of the time it doesn't lose any air at all. Ran over a board in the yard and ruined a tire on the trash trailer.....

Took the 5th wheel out today, blew an a/c hose on the dodge, all of a sudden I'm losing fuel pressure radomly, and the motor is running hot. We managed to catch a rat nest in the generator on fire, caught a spider's web on fire in the back of the fridge, the batteries aren't holding a charge.....

This is one of those days my horoscope should have said...."Stay in Bed!"

BTW, I picked up one of those Yukon Carrier Bearing Pullers so I can do my gears. If you don't want to drive to Sean's let me know. I'm sure I can grenade a bearing just as good as you can..

Is it as heavy as the 40 third? Thats one heavy sombitch.

Looks like the AV is having the desired effect. I love it when a plan comes together. :grinpimp:

Wow. You definitely had a worse day than me. Good luck getting that all figured out.

Thanks for the offer on the gear puller, but I have learned my lesson, I am not a gear guy. I checked the third over and can't see or hear any problems with it setting on the bench, so I don't even know where to start. That is the other reason why I am taking it down to Sean, ever since I put it together I have had that nagging feeling, did I get it right? Well apparently I didn't, so I am going to let Sean make it right.

Yes it is the same size ring gear, with the added benefit of having the locker actuator hanging off of it.

And yes the AV is working...

No, did you help her set the new limit? I was wondering why she was encouraging me to crawl under it. :D

It does suck, but I gave it a try just to see if I could, so while it does suck that I have to do it "over" again, I don't feel too bad.:crybaby:

I appreciate the offer, but once I get ready to put it back in, it should take about an hour until it's ready to roll. (We hope anyway)

Actually we are headed into the Springcreek range (south-east of Topaz). I think Barrett is too much for the white whale. I have never done that trail, so take lots of pictures. If it's not too bad, maybe next time.

YAP...the OLD COLLEGE TRY!
My hat is off to you for attempting it. I was REALLY HOPING that youd have NAILED it so you could have shown me how to do it!:D
That seems like a true art form getting that crap set up JUST RIGHT!
Then...pulling that stunt UNDER the rig....

Youre truly a STUD!

Well I took it to Sean today. He said the preload on the pinion was a little loose, but the pattern was spot on, so I was close. Sean took it all apart and checked everything over and determined that the bearings were all good. He put it back together and cinched down the preload on the pinion and sent me on my way.

It cost me $90 OTD with a new pinion seal and taxes. Sean also suggested I adjust the driveline angle to see if that would alleviate any growl. Sean thought that with the pinion being a little loose and the driveline angle off, that could be the source of my noise.

I hauled a$$ home and put everything together and took it for a drive. I still had a slight growl, so I came home, adjusted the pinion angle up a few degrees and took it for another spin. Yeeeee Hawwww, it's all good in the hood.:bounce::bounce: No vibrations and no growl. I can't tell you how happy that makes me.
