BFE campground

Drew - do you know if the BFE campground is secure enough so we can leave our camping tonnage there during the day.

I've never been to area BFE but the camp site should be fairly secure since we will be the only ones there. I have never heard of any problems in past years and Slickrock campground was open to everyone and just on the edge of town. I will have my trailer there if there are any items that need to be secured. I plan on setting up camp and leaving everything setup during the event

I'm registering tomorrow. I'm bringing my FJC DD from Indiana. Only time I've been to Moab I ran Fins and Things and the offroad through Arches. I'd love I tip or two on trail selection so I don't bend sheetmetal. I'm skidded, lifted, and winched...but from Indiana.

If you have run Fins before the Hell's would be a good option... If you don't do Hell's Gate its just a bigger version of fins. Poison Spider Mesa, Gold Bar Rim, Wipe-Out Hill are all great trails. All of the trails can bend sheetmetal but if you listen to your spotters these are all well with in the capabilities for the FJC. Do you have rock sliders? if so you should not have any problems

Yeah, forgot to mention the sliders. Tore my factory running boards off last year...hehe.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Pardon my indiscretion of barging into your forum!:o Historically this run has been great fun, but it would be great to have more Canadians, on the past runs Drew has been greatly outnumbered by desert dwellers!;p Anyway a few notes to help with your planning, what to expect:

… When is it decided where the pre-run trips will go? ...

We aren’t very good planners, so if you’re the type that expects a set itinerary and to run said itinerary, will likely be disappointed. We will know what towns we are staying in/near each night, have a list of trails that we would like to run and probably have trails penciled in for each day. May or may not run those trails due to; weather, hearing of other trails that sound cool, choice of the group, etc. The goals are to see cool stuff and have a good time, so easily influenced by suggestion.

Trail selection is subject to change up to and including on the trail. One of the very dangerous things to mention on the trail is, “I wonder where that trail goes?” That is likely to bring the caravan to a halt, maps, PCs consulted, discussion and ending up somewhere unplanned! :hillbilly:

If you have a fear of heights, don't like standing/walking/driving on cliff edges, SE Utah will make you uncomfortable! We go to cliff edges for the great views, but normally avoid the cross axle/off camber/driving off the cliff stuff on the prerun, there is plenty of that available on the normal CM runs.:D

… This will be my first time wheeling that kind of terrain so I'm thinking easier to start (maybe as a pre-run) to medium. I'll save the harder trails for another year I think. ...

The prerun goal is exploring, we attempt to start easy and move to slightly more challenging as the group gels, topping in the 3 range out of 5 rating. Most would be doable in a stock Cruiser, but lift, bigger tires, locker will make life easier. The “we attempt” is because most are exploratory, it’s possible (read likely) that we wont know where we are going, so may get into something more challenging than we want. In this case we are also skilled at turning around and that leads to, another on trail selection change!

One exception is Hotel Rock, it a great trail, one of my favorites, but has some ~4ish challenges in the beginning. We have run it twice, haven’t heard much discussion on it this year, so may not run it?

The way we roll isn’t for everyone, expect to leave in the morning and not arrive back in town till duskish (read dark) and be ready to repeat tomorrow, lots of dirt miles. Some, especially kids find this tiring. Most areas are very remote, may not see another rig all day, so rig reliability is of prime importance.

Most of us are experienced, but don’t camp on these trips, find it easier to stay in hotels vs. making camp in the dark every night. Good camping is available close to all places where we stay, if that is your choice. The hotels in Blanding, Monticello are about half of the price of Moab hotels, ~$50 vs. ~$100. They usually give us a discount, when we get what towns we are staying in each night hammered out, will call and post the info.

If your planning to attend, post in the CSC planning thread. The opinions, trail preferences, etc, of everybody attending is important.

Thanks, Keven...

Sounds like most of your Club runs set something out on paper before leaving and modify it as you go. I don't think any of us have a real agenda other then to make it to Cruse Moab and back in one piece. The pre Moab trip with the CSC has always been a nice balance of exploring, sight seeing, wheeling, and having a great time.

As for camping I have a few tried and true spots. 2 of the 3 years I've been down there Monticello has been cold and we have taken a hotel for at least one of the nights we have spent there.

Excellent, thank you for the info.

We are flexible but on a bit of a tight timeline considering the amount of area to see down there. Our goal is to start out friday the 23rd and just get the border crossing over with and into Washington. After that we want to get to Utah in a reasonable amount of time, without too many side trips. Then start exploring Monday.

We are signed up for the overnighter at san rafael, then porcupine rim, then elephant hill for our final day.

We will have at least one obligatory tourist, non-wheeling day when we go check out Arches N.P.

Other than that just need to be back home on May 4.

where is a good time and place to meet for pre-run?

For the overnight looks like tech inspection is preferably Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday AM and your camp will start Tuesday night. So it looks like you will have about 1 1/2 - 2 days to play with depending if you make it to Moab Sunday night or Saturday morning. Spend Monday in Arches and Tuesday go throw tech and see if anyone is heading out on a run... Looks like we will most likly see you Thursday night in area BFE.

We will most likly be about an 1.5-2 hours south of Moab in Monticello or Blanding and you are more then welcome to join us for a day, if you make realy good time getting down to Moab

Another Canadian signed up!!

Taking the '55. Will that be safe? Don't want to restyle the sheet metal!

Nice, all four in different trucks too.
Looking forward to seeing the diesel 55 in action. Safe might depend on trail selection and your spotter but theres pics out there of piggies in moab.

55, 60, 74 Series and FJ still need a 40 and an 80 - so come on guys - life ain't no dress rehearsal.

I don't even like to say it out loud, as things have a way of going to shizzle on me at the last minute a little too often (ok, almost always), but...

... I am registered. Don't tell anyone :D

I don't think you will have any problems with the 55, echoing Martin, it comes down to trail selection, spotters and your ability to put it all together.

Don't tell anyone what... did you say something ;)

I selected the easiest trails available for each day. Max I think was #5. I assume there are bypasses on the areas that re-arrange the sheet metal.
