Hi Folks, the little slot above the bumper, below the radiator grille...what is it? I am hoping it is some form of crank start?

I have been curious about that myself.
 
I really hope it is what I think it is, just hope we don't need arms like Arnie to use it!
 
I believe at one time it was cut for a hand crank but only a few were ever really set up for it. @Output Shaft, I would gather you know the history?
 
That would be a nice option to have.

The second car I owned was a 1961 Datsun B210. It could be crank started and I often did so in my High School parking lot. This confirmed the opinion of my class mates that I was crazy.
 
Needs the claw nut on end of crank to work, but, as Jim saith, the radiator (USA) is a blocker.
 
I have crank started my '40 and it's not that hard to do. Easier if the engine is warm.
