Could Land Cruiser be an entire range of vehicles like Prius?

Beato te Carissimo! Beato te.

I'm sure luck had nothing to do with it, but you have a nice stable of Landcruisers!

The 120 SWB must have been fun!
Never owned one and never even driven one. They are pretty rare here, but I do remember them being considered sleepers and seeing what they can do in the dunes.

Everyone was into the Patrols and 100s at the time, but back then the SWB Prado 120 was more powerful than both in the dunes.
Generally the Prado was lighter so had better performance in the sand.

6 speed manual never even made it to any BIG LC...only ever offered on the Prado.

1GR is excellent too but I still prefer the 1FZ-FE.

Especially if we compare the LC 70 with the same engines. 1FZ-FE > 1GR-FE.

Thanks for your comment on my land cruisers, honestly, id rather have the older 100s than buy another newer car for the same price. Our older used Land Cruiser prices here are not as crazy as they are lately in the US but we are getting strong competition bidding on some of these older rigs from the guys in the US, they are paying big money buying up all the older clean LCs in the Middle East!

Bring back solid axles.
I wonder if they ever do a clean sheet 70 series replacement.
Could they maybe end up selling a version in the US?

I don't ever see a 70 series replacement not having a solid axle.

Of course we are talking about something that may or may not happen in the next 10+ years.
Who knows by then what will even be legal to import in the US and how different regulations will be.

I know for a fact they are getting stricter in the Middle East and Australia and they cannot keep updating the current 70 forever to keep up.
One day they will have to do a clean sheet redesign and that might be the best shot ever of getting something similar to the US brand new.

1GR sounds great in that 120.

This week I have been trying to see about getting the new 2024 FJ70 through Toyota in two EU countries…its a no go. Hilux trucks are about all you can get anymore through the Utility vehicles division. Pity.

You could import them from the Middle East?

Would they allow it to be registered?

They sell them here for around $37k USD
Not sure how much you will have to end up paying in total to get it to your door.

Would be cheaper probably than if they sold them brand new in Europe.
Worth a try. Good idea. I've shipped used cars from the States to Europe often. I shipped one last week. As long as the model is homologated it's easy to do. Never tried from the ME though. I'll work a bit on it...may have a question for you once I do. Cheers

Then again, it is easy for me to say what could have and what should have when I am sitting behind a screen. The bean counters win in the end.
In this case the bean counters completely and utterly yielded the field to the Jeep Wrangler.

Arguments that a Wrangler style vehicle would've cost too much or wouldn't have been profitable are the products of idiots in suits who are locked into an information bubble. The Wrangler itself puts the lie to this specious argument.

I've experienced the kind of groupthink that does retarded stuff like this.

Anyway; the 250 platform is better than the bloated whales Toyota was flogging for however long.

It's very strange. Been beaten to death. But still a head scratcher. VW is going to try it. Maybe even kia with it's new BOF platform.

Tell me you have never had to make a multi billion dollar decision before without telling me.

Well, you would be wrong. But thank you for your mature and well thought out response.

Actually, making a slightly heftier Wrangler with built in Toyota quality would've been the safe bet. Which Toyota failed to do and lost, and I predict they will continue to be behind the dog, now world wide, since the Wrangler has gone international.

I'll SWAG that Toyota's internal culture turned them down the dead end road of Land Cruiser as a luxury vehicle with Lexus versions as another luxury vehicle exactly like it, led to moribund sales.

And yes, I've made big money (and life and death) decisions, and as a result of this, I strongly favor "safe bets."

Some Wrangler sales figures as grist for the mill.

It would be an easy win for Toyota. But so would a decent EV. The Model Y is the best selling (and most profitable?) vehicle in the world and Toyota, the worlds second or third largest auto maker, has so far declined to make any meaningful attempt to play in that market.

My one qualm about a wrangler/bronco is that Toyota would be so late to the game that they may miss the entire generational rise and fall of the popularity of the segment.

Exactly.

The time to have gotten into the market would've been nearly 20 years ago when the wrangler market exploded.

Having said that, I'm tickled pink that they are marketing this current iteration in the US.

Gives an idea of what Toyota/Lexus is thinking for the “Overtrail” lifestyle brand associated with the GX550/LX600.

Great video. Thanks. Anyone who has spent time in Japan knows the people there live in very close quarters and that the love of the outdoors is an essential part of Japanese character. But there is such a real rage for the outdoors these days that 4 door sedans have been rendered obsolete and Toyota has canceled the Camry in Japan! Meanwhile, the hottest car fad in Japan is the new 2024 FJ70. This author from bestcarweb.jp tries to warn potential buyers that the new/old FJ70 can be pretty awkward and uncomfortable to drive, for urban driving and for those with families. But at the end he cannot restrain himself and gushes, “Of course, I am aware of the disadvantages, but I am in love with the FJ70 and I love it so much that I will buy it too.” His arguments against the beloved FJ70 were so unconvincing that he could not even convince himself! Being a FJ70 owner myself, I understand completely.

Sadly I found out this week that I cannot register the new 2024 FJ70 or import it from Dubai to France because the new model is not homologated. A real pity. I know the FJ70 will never be sold in the US but I hope Toyota reconsiders for Europe. We have a love for the outdoors that is very similar to the Japanese and there would be a fad for the FJ70 in Europe again too. Fingers crossed.

There are companies that import and do an isolated homologation of the GRJ7* range. That includes a kit to make the 1GR euro6 compliant.
Not sure if they will change to the new diesel 1GD or stay on the petrol in the future. (should be possible to make the 1GD euro6 compliant as it's available on the J150/J250/Hilux but maybe not worth developing the kit).

There is a brand new registered 2023 GRJ70 available for sale right now in France... Price is 80k€ though....

This video mentions some of the sub categories in the TNGA-F platform.

translation says ''F0 will be the platform - F1 will be the station wagon type - F2 is the light duty Land Cruiser''

F1 is for the station wagon ( Meaning LC300)
F2 is for the light duty range (LC250/Prado)

I am sure it goes into more detail than this I just don't understand Japanese and the YouTube translate only works so well...

start the video from
3 minute 40 to get to the part above ^

Google Lens works great to translate those in-image Japanese subtitles!
It's a little fastidious to hold the phone filming your computer screen for the entire video but it works...
