That's a great photo. Your Dad and his friend look like they belong on one of the 60's era NAVY recruiting posters, the ones that lured me in.

I remember the standard issue .38. Many of us swapped them out for non standard issue sidearms. I carried a S & W Model 39 that I scammed from a SEAL. Your Dad is spot on with the comment about only needing one cartridge. I used to wake up every morning and wonder if it would be my last morning. Those were scary times and I have no fond memories of them. None at all.

Back on track, shot of the ass end of my 40 several years ago...note sticker on right rear quarter :D

Like the Sticker Lee and that Free State of Jones Tag. Dad went to the Navy/Troy game yesterday and saw some guys he flew with, or that went the SEAL route, and he hadn't seen in years.

He tells stories of Dieter Diengler and others and these extravagant escape packs/plans they had if shot down. Dad said he pretty much new his .38 or a cyanide pill was all he ever considered. (He flew 2 types of missions.....hitting bridges or higher level bombing over North vietnam. He said for bridges if he got shot he probably couldn't punch out anyway and north of the DMZ he would punch out but anywhere you landed there was a village that got a reward for you and they knew the terrain.....ie you were screwed.

Glad you are with us and glad he is with us as well. He had a few close calls my grandfather told me about but he doesn't talk about it ever.....only his time in flight school or at the Academy.

That is your 3rd picture in a 1 picture per day tread.

If you were not old as dirt I would call you out on it.

I appreciate your giving me a pass. At my age it's hard to remember the rules, and even harder to count. :o

Kind of late for a Veteran day pic, but better late than never.

22 active duty years, 3 Vietnam era 1 year Westpacs, Four 6 month Med cruises, Never bent metal or got shot down. Retired as the XO of NAS Meridian. Was a great dad and gave me a childhood I would not trade for a million dollars. Growing up on Navy bases was a lot of fun.

FLY NAVY!
