I hate birthday parties! If you have two kids and they have 15 friends to each of their parties that is a possible 30 parties or 30 weekends
we have to repay the favor. It effing blows! Now I know why my parents birthday parties consisted of "what you want for your birthday dinner"

Awesome! Did that date sneak up on you? I always thought those were static dates, but apparently these days, they're dynamic! HA!

Totally snuck up on me... My wife shoved a birthday invitation in my face last night and asked me if I liked it...[as If my opinion matters(ed)]. My eyes immediately went to the Nov. 14th date, and I said something like "looks like a fun party; too bad I'll be camping in Alabama that weekend." All you married guys with kids know how well that was received.

In terms of opine: I'm not aiming to rock the boat. If ya'll move it up, I can be there (possibly Thursday to Sun, but at least Friday to Sunday). If you want to keep the existing date and roll with what's already planned, that's cool too. You can even borrow the "Skottle"

My Cascadia Roof Top Tent should be here in a few days :)

OK. Sipsey area is nice, but it's not nearly as interesting as about Huntsville ->east. In fact, Sipsy looks not terribly different than Mississippi in a lot of respects. I don't intend to try to direct where this trip goes, I'll just offer suggestions. Therefore, if the will of the group is Sipsey, I'm in. I'm just saying there are a LOT more interesting places to explore than the western part of N. AL.........from Gadsden north, for instance, (which is actually the southern end of Lookout Mountain) is not much farther away and is a LOT less like what we're used to seeing every day.

I'll post up some stuff this weekend, and we can all discuss..............

Actually, the last weekend in October - first weekend in November is, in normal climate years, the perfect time to be in NE Alabama / SE Tennessee / NW Georgia. Some of the colors there can rival New England.......as for THIS year, it's anyone's guess.....

I have been following this plan and wishing I could join you folks but the Nov 14 weekend I had already planned to join the guys going up to Clayton, OK for the Big Junk Run. If Nov 6-8 is the new date would you mind if a redneck from Arkansas joined you?

298 miles from Flowood to where the topography gets interesting (Gadsden, AL - Noccalula Falls in downtown Gasden is worth seeing ). 38 more miles to Ft. Payne (where Little River Canyon is located) Coincidentally, the western terminus of the Georgia Overland route Rick sent us is only about 15 miles east of Little River Canyon. I've never been on it, but it looks like there's a good mix road / off-road between there and Summerville, GA (just over the Alabama line in Chattooga County, GA).

Man, come ON! That'd be great!

Map of backcountry roads in Little River Preserve. I did most of them (including water crossings) in my rental Dodge crossover POS. http://www.nps.gov/liri/planyourvisit/upload/2015-LIRI-Park-Maps.pdf

Little River Canyon site says the back country campsites are closed, but Desoto SP is right there. It's kind of remote (for the south) so closed might be open to interpretation. Also close to Buck's Pocket SP and Cathedral Caverns SP.

Swung by Noccalulau falls on the way back from the Smokies and I Never saw it have that much flow as the vid that DNP posted. Good time to go. i don't know if i can swing this trip and the Big Junk Run……hmmmm

Lenny, Martin, and I rode those roads and crossed the upper Little River on a trip in 2012. Nice area, depending on prior rain levels - which will also affect the flow of the falls we've been discussing. As you mentioned, DeSoto has both primitive and improved camping areas (with showers), and it's only minutes from Little River. Buck's Pocket is a pretty cool spot, and I've been to Cathedral Caverns, but not the SP (unless I was in it when I went to CC and didn't know it.) Cloudland Canyon SP, right up the road from FT. Payne and just over the GA line, is also interesting, but I don't know anything about their camping spots. Skyline Wildlife Mgt. Area (just north of Scottsboro - which would put it in the Buck's Pocket Area), is a total wilderness area with lots of roads. We went over a good portion of it in 2012, and while it was kinda fun, there are prolly better places to spend a lot of time in that part of the state.

I'll be looking for more interesting spot and will post by this weekend.

Yeah, I've never seen it with even close to the amount of water the video showed.....

Yeah, here is the "special alert" on the closure of the Little River Campgrounds. Apparently, s***ters are full:

that was in Jan 2015. Do you think they emptied the s***ters by now?
