remington 870 express

870 all the way unless it was going to sit in the corner for home defense then I would get a Mossburg

I'd stil get an 870

I am looking for an Auto, not a pump. I want a reliable gun. It doesn't have to be pretty. I would actually prefer it be in bad shape cosmetically so I don't have to worry about messing it up. It's going to be a duck gun and no more. Might see 4 to 5 hunts a year.

Van's has a few used shotguns in good shape. Remington 1187, Stoeger M2000, Franchi 612 and a few others. They all range from 400-650. I haven't checked any pawn shops yet as I am not sure what gun I am gonna be looking for....

I don't need a home defense gun. Have a big black dog and a 357

Have you looked on www.armslist.com it is like craigslist for guns locally. All kinds of stuff shows up.

No I haven't but thanks for the heads up. I think i will probably end up finding what I need on here. Thanks Bomar!

The problem is your price point, and don't take that the wrong way. I'd save for a while longer before buying a Stoeger or Franchi. If $500 was my budget, I'd try to find a beat older Beretta AL390. They pop up for less than $600 on occasion. My second choice would be a Japanese made Browning A5. I'm particularly fond of the Stalker model (synthetic stock), but they are tough to find. The Japanese A-5's should have choke tubes, etc..

Thanks for the advice. I am trying to gather all sorts of items right now and it keeps draining my shotgun fund. that's why I picked 500 as my budget. At this point, I think I am just gonna suck it up and buy an 870. I have been reading that the newer ones aren't as well made as some of the older ones. Everyone has an opinion though so who knows. Bass pro has a 870 express super mag camo for 449. Will likely be my choice unless something else pops up on the various used sites.

I really really like my old Browning Belgium. Does anyone have any experience with Browning pumps? They have a model called BPS but I don't have any insight on it.

The good news for you is that you have like 8 months until Duck season opens up and 6 months until dove season opens. So unless you are dying to hunt turkey in the next two weeks, you can afford to be patient and wait for what you want or save up more to get a quality auto loader. Once the weather starts to warm up, used shotguns will be a dime a dozen on arms list. I'll keep an eye out for a decent deal.

You are correct. I am dying to go turkey hunting though as I have never been and heard it is a lot of fun. I could borrow a gun though if it came down to that.

Patience has never been one of my strong suits but am attempting to be patient in this instance. I would appreciate it if you would keep an eye out for me. I am looking myself too.

BPS means Big Piece of s***

870's rule

Man, Nolen's harsh. I'm a big 870 fan and have stated that here before, but I have an older 28" BPS that belonged to my grandfather. It's an outstanding shotgun. Maybe I'm just partial to it due to the history??? Of course I like Benelli's too, though. Speaking of which, there's a nice one in the mudbay forum.

I shot competitive clays and was a Clays instructor for years.

I have seen shotguns with thousands and thousands of rounds through them.

Most all of that experience transferred into nasty duck hunting conditions, trips to Mexico and other harsh field tests.

If they worked good in both places they are my choices.

Benelli's work good with heavy loads but kick like a mule (recoil operated action)

BPS's are not even in same league as an 870 in reliability. Prettier, yes.

I saw that one in the classifieds. It looks brand new. Its way too nice to drop in a pond while duck hunting or subject it to nasty conditions though. Thanks for the heads up.

What do you think about buying a used 870 as opposed to a new one? I have read on gun forums(...everyone has an opinion...just like here) that the quality of the new ones is not on par with the older ones.

That being said, there is an 870 Super Mag 28" for 449 at bass Pro. http://www.basspro.com/Remington-87...wl-Camo-Shotgun-w/28-Barrel/product/10218711/

I could probably find a similar one that has some age on it for 100-175 cheaper. Thoughts on new vs. used but well cared for?
