80 compared to G500
Dan, just wondering but could this have anything to do with your problem? "blown,water/methanol injected" noticed this in your sig. ;)
Pit, :D

Not really, you see I have had "grey matter" present in my engine for years, well pre-dating blower installation. The blower has been on there for 3 1/2 years and 41,000 miles. I imagine that if it was an issue, the head would have flown off some time ago. :D

Re:80 compared to G500

Phil,

I understand your point, but don't take my word for it that the 80 series is an astonishingly high quality vehicle. Check the data. Problems per 100 vehicles, JD Powers, etc.

I'm also not a "company man", having owned more non-Toyota vehicles in my life than Toyotas and I haven't worked for Toyota for 12 years. I'll again state that there is no achilles heel on the 80 series, which means there is no chronic recurring problem, no widespread problem and no major design flaws on the vehicle. You are free to disagree, but it might be worth your time to research the data on the real world reliability of the 80 series.

Seriously. Spend a couple days looking at a Rover forum as someone mentioned above. On our board you'll see minor issues here and there. On those boards you'll see threads titled "My rear diff grenaded while driving to Grandma's house - anyone else?" and 45 others chime in that the same thing happened. Quality wise, we here on the 80 list live in a completely different neighborhood...

"company man", heh. He has some good strories about driving a Wolfsburg Jetta to work at GM headquarters in the late 80s, when resentment of "foreign" cars was at it's most hostile.

80 compared to G500

Well I've been fortuneate to get a slightly used radiator from a forum member. He's ask me to send him the tranny cooler part back. After removing this part I'll check for some of that grey stuff. If there is some I'll save it and if someone can tell me where to send it I will.

My bro's Corolla was totaled by vandals when he drove it to work at a GM plant in the 80's. He then bought a Sprint to commute in.

I had several offers in on G series just 1 month ago.

I found out all of them were rough and had been scoped out by the G crowd...with negative results.

I like the idea of a G...Mercedes makes stock springs for weight differences (which equals stock lift springs).

No issues with drivelines, etc.

You can even get a 6 inch lift that they use the springs for the pope-mobile!

I love my 80, and will build it out in due time, but if I can get a G for a decent price I am jumping.

And I'll chip in via PayPal (or whatever) to help pay for the analysis.

Snapshot responses to above:

Like the G, the 80 also has stock springs that vary by load - different spring goes in if you have a third seat, etc.

Yes, I would not be easily accused of being a company man and indeed did buy a new Jetta GLI the month before I showed up at GM headquarters for my new job.

This happened around 1984 in Detroit when import bashing was at its height. One day, a guy's brother I knew parked his new Civic at the local grocery store in Detroit. While checking out, he watched through the front window as a guy in an old domestic pickup intentionally slam his door into the Civic. He watched the guy walk in as he finished checking out. Then he went out to his car, put the groceries in, started the car and pulled a ball peen hammer out from under the seat. He then proceeded to bash every pane of glass out of the truck and whacked every panel several times before jumping in and taking off. Justice served. My own beloved 80 was a victim of this as well. Right in front of me and my biggest buddy, a guy slammed his door into the side of the Cruiser then did it again before walking away. We caught up to him immediately and the asshat denied it. Not willing to go to jail over a door nick, I confirmed it was just paint damage before deciding not to call the police. Plus he was an old man, and it just didn't seem right going off on a guy that may have fought in WW2 or something - I have a soft heart for vets.

On the grey stuff, I'll also contribute, and someone who's good at searching should find the thread we last discussed this in because someone in that thread offered to analyze it in the lab or something they worked at if we'd pay for it.

Re:80 compared to G500

If you go into the archives of the 80's cool this subject was mentioned and some links were posted about the 80's vs Gwagons over in germany. The germans liked the 80 over the g-wagon for the toughness and reliability. If you think japanese parts are expensive then try harder to get german parts. I do think it would be fun to wheel those expencive truck. later robbie

Re:80 compared to G500

Doug and others,

Here is the thread and Seminole volunteered to try and have the analysis done for no charge.

This is what the sludge looks like.
