coolant issue (1 Viewer)

Can someone help me understand the overall movement within the coolant system? My understanding is the coolant flows into top of radiator and then out bottom. Doesn’t make sense to me though as it then appears the thermostat is downstream of the water pump. I would have thought the Thermostat would be upstream of the water pump and prevent water from getting to the pump if it’s not hot yet.

Water is pumped from the lower hose into the engine. Once the water is heated to the tstats temp it opens and water is forced out the upper hose to the rad.
 
Pretty sure it circulates the water within the blk when the tstat is closed.
