American business men decided a long time ago to increase yields they had to make their product over seas. They didn't and still don't care about the long term consequences. Our legislators have done nothing but encourage it. Getting mad at the Chinese is like getting mad at the guy who screws your wife's brains out when she goes over to his house but not getting mad at her. I go to China as much as anybody on this board and dislike them for other reasons but most of my anger is pointed at us. We want 30 cheap s***ty toys instead of 5 good ones for our kids. A lot of americans want something for nothing and don't want to work for it. I think it is ironic that the Japanese, Germans, and now the Chinese still have a strong industrial base and we got nadda.

Amen.

So many customer want the cheapest tire.
Even if the USA made tire cost $15 more most of them won't be swayed.
It's truly sad.

Supposedly these tires are made in the US.. 285/75//16 for $160

I think if american manufacturing was superior this would be a jeep chevy or ford forum.. But it's not. Think about it.. If manufacturing in the US was superior to foreign manufacturing than $15 difference would be a bargain... But its not
That is why you see people buying chinese stuff.
Manufacturing cost has gotten outragious due to unions & other factors.

The biggest problem I have with China is the pollution they're causing. Can't blame them for wanting to make a buck, but at what cost?!

Classic example is the F1 race in shanghai. If you watch the qualifying and practice sessions, you can't see the end of the front straight. The government shuts down all the major factories in town for that entire week to let the air clear up some. By Sunday ( main race ) the air isn't bad and you can see the end of the straight clearly. And that's the pic most of the world gets to see when they watch the race on TV.

Slowly but surely killing the planet .......... Sad.

I think that walmart ad is BS...seeing is believing

Way to stir things up, JT

Hang in there folks, soon you'll be able to purchase "Made In Memphis" appliances, where the labor force has fewer skills and demands lower pay than either China or Mexico.

http://www.npr.org/2013/04/08/176347792/one-manufacturing-giant-creates-winners-and-losers

Currently in Memphis we have 15,000-18,000 unfilled jobs in a city of 45,000 unemployed because the population is unqualified to do the work.

Nobody wants to WORK. It's either go in debt up to your eyes to go to college to study liberal arts to get a minimum wage job or stay home and collect goodies from the govt Santa Claus.

Walmart is the devil.

Agree and my family shops there weekly.

By the way: anyone else being plagued by some sort of pop-up "you're missing "X" player" ad when navigating to or in MUD? I have been for a couple days, but it's limited exclusively to MUD. Neither my browser, nor any other sites, bring this thing up.

Anyone else?

From my feeble un-educated mind.... We need a reboot. It's our own fault. We've always had cheap labor force. Initially started with slaves, but emancipation proclamation, moved to children, child labor laws, then women, women's suffrage. We ran out of cheap labor forces at home, so we outsourced.
I long for the days of "Made in Mexico"... tired of throw-away goods from China. I watched a documentary a couple years ago that said manufacturing will be cheaper in the US than in China by the late teens. I found that hard to believe then.... but now, I can believe it. This economy is sinking fast and people will have no other choice but to take the cheap jobs that 10 years prior would've laughed uncontrollably at. But honestly, it will not even be people with jobs, it will be machines being run by a handful of people. So it makes sense.
Between jobs, I helped a friend run some presses two years ago at the family plant. I used to work at this plant in college, when roughly 30 people worked 50 hour weeks, including me. But this time, It was only about 5 people working in the SAME plant doing the same amount of production. All the presses are now automated with a person walking around filling oil, pulling bins, etc... but even that is becoming automated, so eventually, it will be ONE person in the entire plant.
Technology. It is the fire.
